TEASER

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

Open on an eye opening. Pupil contracts. See the tops of tall trees swaying in the wind. View of a man's face (Jack) that has cuts on it. He's got on a suit and tie. Pan out to show entire body. He's lying on the ground on his back. Erratic breathing. He whips his hand to his left. A dog (golden lab) comes walking up and runs away. Man is in pain. Stands up. Pulls jacket back a little – a lot of pain. Pulls travel liquor bottle out of right jacket pocket and puts it back. Stumbles through trees. Runs out to a beach. Pan to left. There is screaming and a whirring sound. Man walks towards sounds. There is wreckage on the beach – smoke, metal parts, people stumbling around.

MAN
(indistinct)
Help me! Somebody help me!

Whirring continues very loud and very windy.

WOMAN
Oh my God!

The engine turbine is still running and pulling bits of clothes into it.

JIN
(in Korean)
[Yelling for wife]

MICHAEL
Walt! Walt!

EXTRA
Stay away from the gas! Stay there!

Shannon screaming. Plane midsection is seen with wing up in the air.

MAN
Help! Help! Somebody help me!

He is trapped in front of turbine – leg is caught under landing gear.

MAN (cont'd)
Help! Help! Aah! My leg!

Jack runs over and tries to lift wheel.

JACK
(yells to various people.)
Hey, get over here. Give me a hand. You,
come on. Come over here.
On the count of three. One...two...three.

Some people lift the wheel as Jack pulls guy out. He uses his tie as a tourniquet. Hears and sees pregnant lady yelling.

CLAIRE
Help! Please help me! Help me! Help me!

JACK
All right, get him out of here!
(to extra)
Get him away from the engine. Get him out of here!

Jack runs to Claire.

CLAIRE
Oh my God. Help me. I'm having contractions.

JACK
How many months pregnant are you?

CLAIRE
I'm eight months.

JACK
And how far apart are they coming?

Jack sees Boone trying to do CPR compressions on Rose.

CLAIRE
I don't know. I think it just happened.

Engine roaring. Men are helping another man walk in front of a turbine.

EXTRA
(to the men near turbine)
Hey, hey, hey. Get him away!

Guy near turbine gets sucked in and turbine explodes. Jack covers Claire with body.

JACK
Listen to me. Look at me. You're gonna
be okay. You understand me? You have to
sit absolutely still.

Claire is grunting. Jack looks at kid nearby.

JACK (cont'd)
Hey, you.
(to Hurley)
Come here! I need you to get this woman away
from these fumes. Take her over there.
(pointing)
Stay with her. If her contractions occur any
closer than three minutes apart, call out for me.

HURLEY
(to himself)
Oh, you gotta be kidding me.

JACK
(to Claire)
I'll be right back, okay?

Jack runs off.

HURLEY
Hey! What's your name?

JACK
Jack!
(to Boone)
Stop, her head's not tilted far back
enough. You're blowing air into her stomach.

BOONE
Are you sure?

Jack gives mouth to mouth to Rose.

BOONE (cont'd)
That's exactly what I was doing. I'm a
lifeguard. I'm licensed.

JACK
Yeah, well you need to seriously think about
giving that license back.

BOONE
Maybe we should do one of those hole things,
you know, stick that pen in the throat.

JACK
(sarcastic, still doing
compressions on Rose)
Yeah, good idea. You go get me a pen.

BOONE
Does anyone have any ink pens? Do you
have a pen?

Boone runs off in search of a pen.

JACK
Come on, come on, come on, come on.

Rose finally breathes. Jack hears metal groaning. Looks up. Metal is set to fall on Claire and Hurley. He runs to them, yelling to Hurley and Claire.

JACK (cont'd)
Move, move, move. Get her up! Get her out of there!

Hurley looks up. Helps Claire up. Metal crashes down and there's an explosion. Jack, Claire and Hurley hit the sand. A flaming metal piece falls behind Charlie, who seems dazed.

JACK
(to Claire)
Are you okay?

CLAIRE
(shaking her head)
Yeah.

JACK
(to Hurley)
You?
(off Hurley's nod)
Stay with her.

HURLEY
Dude, I'm not going anywhere.

END OF TEASER

ACT ONE

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - DAY - LATER

Jack walks around, surveying the damage. Boone runs up to Jack holding onto about five pens, and holds them out.

BOONE
I didn't know which one worked best.

JACK
(looks down)
They're all good. Thanks.

Jack walks away. Opens a suitcase, looks for something, pulls out a mending kit.

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

Jack runs into the forest with a white shirt. Stops when there's no one around. Pulls off suit jacket. There's blood on the back left part of his back. Hangs jacket on tree. Takes off dress shirt and undershirt. Goes to knees. Tries to see the slash, but can't quite reach it. Someone approaches.

JACK
(to Kate)
Excuse me.
(She looks at him.)
Did you ever use a needle?

KATE
What?

JACK
Did you ever patch a pair of jeans?

KATE
(shakily)
I, um, I made the drapes in my apartment.

JACK
That's fantastic. Listen, do you have a
second? I could use a little help here.

Kate walks to him.

KATE
Help with what?

JACK
With this.

He raises his arm to show gash. Kate closes her eyes.

JACK (cont'd)
Look, I'd do it myself; I'm a doctor.
But I just can't reach.

KATE
You want me to sew that up?

JACK
It's just like the drapes. Same thing.

KATE
No, with the drapes it was a sewing machine.

JACK
No, you can do this. I'm telling you.
If you wouldn't mind.

Beat.

KATE
Of course I will.

JACK
Thank you.

He reaches down and grabs liquor bottle and hands it to Kate.

JACK (cont'd)
It's for your hands.

Kate pours some on her hands.

JACK (cont'd)
Save me some.
(off her look)
For the, for the wound.

KATE
(grabs kit)
Any color preference?

JACK
(laughs)
No. Standard black.

He pours liquor on the wound.

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - DAY

Back on the beach, Sawyer takes out a cigarette, puts it in his mouth, and lights it. He views the wreckage. The sun is setting. Campfires are in the background. Claire is standing on the edge of the water, shoes in hand. She touches her belly. Hurley is sorting airline food. Locke is sitting on the sand, away from the others.

Boone holds cell phone to ears: out of range signal.

BOONE
Come on! Come on!

Sayid is loading wood onto a fire. Charlie is sitting near him.

SAYID
Hey you! What's your name?

CHARLIE
Me? Charlie.

SAYID
Charlie. We need help with the fire.
(Hands over sticks.)
No one will see it if it isn't big.

CHARLIE
Okay, I'm on it. What's your name?

SAYID
Sayid.

CHARLIE
Sayid. I'm on it, Sayid.

Pan down to Rose, who kisses a ring on a chain around her neck.

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

Kate is sewing Jack's wound.

KATE
I might throw up on you.

JACK
(shakes his head)
You're doing fine.

KATE
You don't seem afraid at all. I don't
understand that.

JACK
Well, fear's sort of a odd thing. When
I was in residency, my first solo procedure
was a spinal surgery on a 16-year-old kid.
A girl. And at the end, after thirteen hours,
I was closing her up and I, I accidentally
ripped her dural sac. Shredded the base of
the spine where all the nerves come together.
Membrane. Stenos tissue, and so it ripped
open. Nerves just spilled out of her like
angel hair pasta. Spinal fluid flowing out
of her, and I...
(pauses)
...and the terror was just so crazy, so real,
and I knew I had to deal with it.

A tear runs out of his right eye.

JACK (cont'd)
So I just made a choice. I'd let the fear
in, let it take over, let it do its thing.
But only for five seconds. That's all I
was gonna give it. So I started to count:
1-2-3-4-5. Then it was gone. I went back
to work, sewed her up, and she was fine.

KATE
If that had been me, I think I would
have run for the door.

JACK
You know, I don't think that's true.
You're not running now.

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - NIGHT

Night. People are around various campfires. Charlie writes FATE on bandages on his left fingers. He sits next to Sayid.

SAYID
You think they would have come by now.

CHARLIE
(looking up)
What? Who?

SAYID
Anyone.

Shannon is painting her toenails. Boone sits down next to her and offers her a candy bar.

SHANNON
As if I'm gonna start eating chocolate.

BOONE
Shannon, we may be here for a while.

SHANNON
The plane had a black box, idiot. They know
exactly where we are. They're coming.

Boone still offers candy bar.

SHANNON (cont'd)
I'll eat on the rescue boat. I'll eat on
the rescue boat.

Hurley walks up to Claire, who's sitting on a metal part from the plane.

HURLEY
Hungry?

CLAIRE
Yeah, thanks.

Hurley hands over an airline food packet.

HURLEY
Any more, uh, you know, baby stuff?

CLAIRE
No, I'm, I'm okay.

Hurley takes disposable silverware out of his breast pocket and gives it to her.

HURLEY
Well, hang in there.

CLAIRE
Yeah, you too.

Hurley gets up, walks away, comes back and gives her a second dinner. Claire laughs.

MICHAEL
(to Walt)
You sure you're warm enough?

Walt nods head, laying down.

JIN
(in Korean, to Sun)
[You must not leave my sight. You must
follow me wherever I go. Do you understand?]
Sun nods.

JIN (cont'd)
[Don't worry about the others. We need to
stay together.]

Sun nods again.

Kate is watching Jack check on the Marshal. The Marshal has a piece of metal sticking up out of his gut.

KATE
Do you think he's gonna live?

JACK
Do you know him?

KATE
He was sitting next to me.

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - NIGHT - LATER

Later, near a fire.

JACK
We must have been at about 40,000 feet
when it happened.

He has made a representation of a plane out of plastic.

JACK (cont'd)
Hit an air pocket and dropped maybe...200 feet.
The turbulence was...I blacked out.

KATE
I didn't.
(off Jack's look)
I saw the whole thing. I knew that the tail
was gone, but I couldn't bring myself to look
back. And then the, the front end of the plane
broke off.

JACK
Well, it's not here on the beach. Neither is the
tail. We need to figure out which way we came in.

KATE
Why?

JACK
'Cause there's a chance we could find the
cockpit. If it's intact, we might be able
to find the transceiver, and we could send out
a signal and help the rescue party find us.

KATE
How do you know all that?

JACK
Took a couple flying lessons. It wasn't for me.

KATE
I saw some smoke just through the valley.
If you're thinking about going for the
cockpit, I'm going with you.

JACK
(laughs)
I don't know your name.

KATE
I'm Kate.

JACK
Jack.

Rumbling. Branches rumbling in the forest. Locke looks back to the forest. There's a low growl. Walt sits up. Shannon and Boone look back.

SHANNON
What was that?

CHARLIE
(to Sayid)
That was weird, right?

WALT
Is that Vincent?

MICHAEL
It's not Vincent.

Stomping.

CLAIRE
Did anybody see that?

HURLEY
Yeah.

Boone stands up.

SHANNON
Boone!

Roaring echo. Loud stomping. Thud. Roaring. Branches are being shoved aside.

CHARLIE
Terrific.

END ACT ONE

ACT TWO

INT. AIRPLANE - FLASHBACK

View out of airline window of the clouds and wing. Pan out on Jack.

FLIGHT ATTENDANT #1
So, how's the drink?

JACK
It's good.

FLIGHT ATTENDANT #1
That wasn't a very strong reaction.

JACK
Well, it's not a very strong drink.

FLIGHT ATTENDANT #1
Shh. Don't tell anyone.

She hands him two little liquor bottles.

JACK
This, of course, breaks some critical
FAA regulations.

She smiles at him. Jack puts one liquor bottle in a pocket and pours the other in his glass, and drinks it in one gulp. Moves from window seat to aisle seat. Charlie walks by quickly.

CHARLIE
Excuse me.

FLIGHT ATTENDANT #2
Sir, excuse me.

ROSE
I guess he really had to go.
(sotto voce)
Ha, ha.

FLIGHT ATTENDANT #2
Sir, excuse me.

She walks past. Two male flight attendants walk past following the first two. There is turbulence, passengers gasping.

FLIGHT ATTENDANT #2
(over speaker)
Ladies and gentlemen, the pilot has switched on the
"fasten seat belt" sign. Please return to your
seats and fasten your seatbelts.

JACK
(to Rose)
It's normal.

ROSE
Oh, I know. I've just never been a very good
flyer. My husband keeps reminding me that
planes want to be in the air.

JACK
Well, he sounds like a very smart man.

ROSE
I'll be sure and tell him that when he gets
back from the bathroom.

Creaking and heavy turbulence.

JACK
Well, I'll keep you company until he does.
Don't worry. It's gonna be over.

There is MAJOR turbulence. People fly out of seats. The engine is roaring. An alarm is blaring. Everyone is shaking violently. Oxygen masks come down. There is chaos. People put on masks. Smash cut to view of the ocean in the background, with Jack silent in the foreground.

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - DAY

MAN
It sounded like an animal. That sound that it made.
I keep thinking there was something really familiar
about it.

WOMAN
Where are you from?

ROSE
The Bronx.

MAN
It might be monkeys.

MAN #2
Sure, it's monkeys. It's monkey island...

Kate comes up behind Jack.

KATE
You ready?

JACK
(turning)
Kate, you showed me where the smoke was.
I can get there myself.

KATE
I'm coming.

JACK
(laughs)
Well, you're gonna need better shoes.

Kate pulls hiking boots off of a dead person. She looks really sad, upset. She looks at Locke. He smiles with an orange rind, then takes it out.

MICHAEL
Whatever it was, it wasn't natural.

CHARLIE
Does anyone have any sun block?

SHANNON
Yeah, I do.

HURLEY
(sitting down)
Oh, so I was just looking inside the fuselage.
It's pretty grim in there. Do you think we should
do something about the, uh, B – O – D – Y – S?

MICHAEL
What are you spelling, man? Bodies?

WALT
B – O – D – I – E – S.

SAYID
That sounds like a good idea.

SHANNON
No, they'll deal with it when they get here.

Jack approaches their circle.

JACK
I'm gonna go out and look for the cockpit.
See if we can find a transceiver to send a
distress signal. Help the rescue team.
(to Boone)
You're gonna need to keep an eye on the wounded.
If the guy in the suit wakes up, try to keep him
calm, but don't let him remove that piece of
shrapnel. You understand?

BOONE
(nodding)
Yeah, got it. What about the guy with the
leg, the tourniquet?

JACK
I stopped the bleeding. I took it off last
night. He should be all right.

BOONE
Yeah, cool. Good job.

CHARLIE
(looking up)
I'll come with. I want to help.

Charlie stands.

JACK
Nah, I don't need any more help.

CHARLIE
No, it's cool. I don't really feel like
standing still, so...
(off Jack's nod)
Excellent.

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

Jack, Kate and Charlie walk across a hill.

KATE
(to Charlie)
Can I ask you something?

CHARLIE
Me? I'd be thrilled. I've been waiting.

KATE
Have we ever met anywhere?

CHARLIE
No, that would be unlikely.

KATE
Hmm.

CHARLIE
I look familiar, though, right?

KATE
Yeah.

CHARLIE
Can't quite place it?

KATE
No, I can't.

CHARLIE
Yeah, I think I know.

KATE
You do?

CHARLIE
(sings in falsetto)
You all, everybody. You all, everybody.
(speaks normally)
You never heard that song?

KATE
I've heard it. I just don't know what the hell...

CHARLIE
That's us. Driveshaft. Look, the ring. Second
tour of Finland. You never heard of Driveshaft?

KATE
The band?

CHARLIE
Yeah, the band.

KATE
You were in Driveshaft?

CHARLIE
I am in Driveshaft. I play bass.

KATE
Seriously?

CHARLIE
Yeah, Charlie. Track 3. You know, I do
backing vocals.

KATE
My friend Beth would freak. She loves you guys.

CHARLIE
Well, give me Beth's number. I'll call her. I'd
love to. Does she live nearby?

JACK
Hey.

KATE
(to Jack)
You ever heard of Driveshaft?

CHARLIE
(singing)
You all everybody, you all everybody.

JACK
We got to keep moving.

KATE
They were good.

CHARLIE
They are good. Still together. In the
middle of a comeback.

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - DAY

View of Vincent.

On the beach, on Locke sitting in the sand. Thunder rumbles.

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

In the forest, it starts to rain.

CHARLIE
Hey, guys, is this normal? Kind of day turning
into night, you know. End of the world type weather?
Is this? Guys?

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - DAY

On the beach, people run for cover except Locke. Jin and Sun are under a metal part. Someone tries to come in. Jin yells at them in Korean and shoos them away.

JIN
(in Korean)
[Hey, there isn't any space for you here!
Go that way!]
(pointing)
[Plenty of space over there!]

HURLEY
(to Boone and Shannon)
I'm telling you, you don't want to go in there.
There's too many bodies.

Branches are rumbling. There is stomping.

CLAIRE
There it is again.

ROSE
Oh, my God.

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

In the forest, Jack, Kate and Charlie find the front of the plane and look at it.

JACK
Well, let's do this.

The cockpit is propped at a 45 degree angle. They start to climb up to the cockpit.

CHARLIE
Let's get this trans...

JACK
Transceiver.

CHARLIE
Transceiver thing and get out of here.

INT. AIRPLANE

They use seats as a sort of step ladder to climb to the top. The plane creaks and there are dead people in the seats. Jack reaches the door, and it's locked. He uses a fire extinguisher to bust the lock open. It opens and the co-pilot falls out. They all yell.

JACK
(to Kate)
You okay?

KATE
Yeah, you?

JACK
Yeah.

CHARLIE
I'm fine. Charlie's fine by the way. Okay.

JACK
(to Kate)
Hey, you don't have to come up here.

KATE
No, I'm good.

JACK
Come on.

Jack grabs her hand to haul her into the cockpit. They pause.

KATE
So, what does a transceiver look like?

JACK
Like a complicated walkie-talkie.

They move to the front to look. The pilot gasps awake. Jack and Kate both gasp and jump. The pilot coughs.

JACK (cont'd)
Hey, can you hear me?
(to Kate)
I need that water.

Kate hands over a bottle of water. He opens the cap and puts it to the pilot's lips.

JACK
Here.

The pilot chokes.

PILOT
How many survived?

JACK
At least 48. Does anything feel broken?

PILOT
No, no. Just my head. It's a little dizzy.
That's all.

JACK
It's probably a concussion.

PILOT
How long has it been?

JACK
Sixteen hours.

PILOT
Sixteen. Has anybody come?

JACK
Not yet.

PILOT
Six hours in, our radio went out. No one could
see us. We turned back to land in Fiji. By the
time we hit turbulence we were a thousand miles
off course. They're looking for us in the wrong
place. We have a transceiver.

JACK
Good, good. That's what we were hoping. Listen,
you shouldn't try to move.

PILOT
No, no. I'm okay. The transceiver's right there,
it's right there.

Kate hands it to the pilot. There's static.

JACK
Where's Charlie?

Kate goes to look.

PILOT
It's not working.

The plane creaks.

KATE
Charlie?

Charlie pops out of the lavatory.

KATE (cont'd)
What were you doing in the bathroom?

CHARLIE
What?

There are monster echoes, and low growling.

PILOT
What the hell was that?

JACK
Kate.

They all go into the cockpit. Branches are crunching.

KATE
It's right outside.

PILOT
What? What's right outside?

JACK
Shh.

There is growling, stomping, and low groans. Shadow passes under. The growling stops. The pilot puts the transceiver on the seat and puts head out of the broken window to look. He gets pulled out of the window. Everyone else screams. Blood spatters on the outside of the window.

CHARLIE
What the hell just happened?

The plane is jarred.

KATE
Aah!

The transceiver slips to the ground. The front of the plane is knocked into sitting in a horizontal position.

KATE
Jack, come on.

Jack reaches for the transceiver.

CHARLIE
Just leave it.

Jack grabs it.

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

They all run into the forest. There is growling. Charlie slips in the mud. His foot is caught in roots.

CHARLIE
Hey!

Jack gets Kate to run off and runs back to Charlie, helps him up and frees him.

JACK
Run!

Kate hides behind some trees, crying.

KATE
Jack!

There is distant stomping and thunder crashes.

KATE
(to herself)
One...two...three...four...five.

END ACT TWO

ACT THREE

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

Kate is behind branches. She peeks out and turns around. Charlie is there.

CHARLIE
Kate.

KATE & CHARLIE
Aah, aah!

Kate falls into him knocking both to the ground. Kate pins him.

KATE
Where the hell is Jack?

CHARLIE
I don't know.

KATE
Did you see him?

CHARLIE
Yeah, he pulled me up.

KATE
Where is he?

CHARLIE
I don't know.

KATE
How can you not know?

CHARLIE
We got separated. Look, I fell down. He came
back for me. That thing was...

KATE
(evenly)
Did you see it?

CHARLIE
No, no. But it was right there. We were dead.
I was, and then Jack came back and he pulled me up.
I don't know where he is.

The rain stops.

KATE
We have to go back for him.

CHARLIE
Go back? There?
(lifting his head)
Kate, there's a certain gargantuan quality
about this thing.

KATE
(walking away)
Then don't come.

CHARLIE
Kate!

He gets up to follow her. Kate and Charlie walk through the forest.

CHARLIE
I heard you shout. I heard you shout "Jack."
I'm Charlie, by the way.

Kate stops, looking at something on the ground.

CHARLIE (cont'd)
What is that?

There is a view of a wings pin – the kind that you can pin on your shirt. Kate picks it up out of the mud, near some water. She looks at it and then focuses on a reflection in the water of a body suspended in the branches. Kate stands up to look, as does Charlie.

CHARLIE
What?

JACK
(coming from behind)
It's the pilot.

Kate and Charlie turn to face him.

KATE
Did you see it?

JACK
(shaking his head)
No. It was right behind me but I dove into the bushes.

CHARLIE
Guys? How does something like that happen?

Charlie points up to the bloody corpse of the pilot.
