TEASER

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - DAY

An eye opens. It's Locke on his back in the sand just after the crash. Shannon and Jin are yelling. Locke looks down as he wiggles his stocking-footed toe. He sits up and grabs a shoe.

EXT. ISLAND - NIGHT - PRESENT TIME

Vincent is barking.

MICHAEL
Hey, Walt. You gotta keep that dog quiet.

WALT
I don't know what's wrong with him. Come on,
Vincent. Cut that out!

MICHAEL
No.

Vincent is trying to get free of his leash and is waking people up.

MICHAEL (cont'd)
(to Boone & Shannon)
Hey, sorry, sorry.

Jin and Sun wake up. Metal is creaking and rattling. There is crashing and growling. Claire and Hurley wake. Sayid wakes. Charlie wakes. Jack comes running to the fuselage. Something is inside.

KATE
(to Jack)
What is it?

CLAIRE
Something's in there.

SAYID
Everyone in there's dead.

JACK
Sawyer.

SAWYER
Right behind you, jackass.

Jack pulls out a flashlight and walks towards the noise.

KATE
Jack.

SAWYER
I'm gonna shed some light on this.

Sawyer pulls out a flashlight and shines it into the fuselage and a pair of eyes reflect the light.

JACK
Run!

Everyone runs. There is a wild animal in the fuselage.

HURLEY
Oh, crud. Now what?

SHANNON
Do something!

Boone tries to shield himself and her from the animals. Charlie is knocked over. Jack grabs him and pulls him away. Animals run into the forest.

SAYID
They've gone.

SUN
(in Korean)
[What was that?]

CHARLIE
What the bloody hell was that?

LOCKE
Boars.

ACT ONE

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - TENT - DAY

Jack is bandaging a scrape on Charlie.

JACK
Those boars were looking to feed. We have
to get rid of the bodies.

CHARLIE
Bury them? There's a whole bunch there.

SAYID
More than twenty. Digging will be difficult
without shovels.

JACK
Not bury. We need to burn them.

Everyone pauses.

KATE
They're people.

JACK
I know they're people, Kate.

SAYID
Burning the remains. They deserve better
than that.

JACK
Better than what? Being eaten by wild animals?
Because that's what's going to happen. Any
bodies we bury are not gonna stay buried for
very long. Look, I know this seems harsh, but
that fuselage in the sun, it's not about what
they deserve. They're gone and...we're not.

SAYID
What you say may be true, but for us to decide how
these people are laid to rest? It's not right.
No regard for their wishes? Their religions?

JACK
We don't have time to sort out everybody's God.

CHARLIE
Really? Last time I heard we were positively
made of time.

JACK
Look, I'm not happy about it either. But we
crashed a thousand miles off course. They're
looking for us in the wrong place. It's been
four days. No one's come. Tomorrow morning we
need everyone to start gathering up wood, dried
brush. We're gonna turn that fuselage into a
furnace. Wait until the sun goes down tomorrow
night before we set the fire.

Jack leaves the tent.

CHARLIE
If he's so eager to burn the bodies, why wait
until sundown?

KATE
He's hoping someone will see it.

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - DAY - LATER

Sayid is working with the electronic equipment. Kate walks up behind him.

KATE
Looks like I'm not the only one who didn't
sleep last night.

SAYID
There are better things to do with my time
than collect firewood.

KATE
You don't agree with Jack. What are you making?

SAYID
Too soon to talk about. I'm not sure it'll even work.

KATE
You're trying to pick up the transmissions, aren't
you? The one we heard on the transceiver.

SAYID
If the French woman's transmissions have truly
been playing on a loop for sixteen years, then
there must be a power source on the island. A
significant one.

KATE
And you can find it?

SAYID
Hypothetically, yes. I'm making an antenna of
sorts, with a few of these mounted at different
points on the island, I may be able to use the
transceiver to triangulate the signal, find out
where it's coming from.

KATE
So what can I do to help?

SAYID
It appears you're as anxious to get off this
island as I am.

Michael and Walt are walking through tall grass towards the beach.

WALT
Catch the ball. Catch the ball, Vincent. Good
job, Vincent.

Michael is hauling wood. He sees Locke open a metal suitcase. Walt heads to Locke.

MICHAEL
Hey, hey. Where you going, man?

WALT
Nowhere. I just thought I'd see what Mr. Locke
was doing.

MICHAEL
Hey, why don't you help your dad with the wood?
I'm sure Mr. Locke doesn't want a kid hanging
around him all day anyway.

WALT
At least he talks to me.

Walt walks away.

WALT (cont'd)
Come on, Vincent.

Hurley and Sawyer are arguing. Hurley's trying to get a bag from Sawyer.

HURLEY
What's your problem? Hand 'em over!

SAWYER
How about no.

HURLEY
There's other people here, or don't you give a crap?

SAWYER
Yeah, well if one of us wouldn't eat more than
his fair share...

HURLEY
Oh, that's bull and you know it!

BOONE
Guys, knock it off.

HURLEY
You're not happy unless you're screwing over...

SAWYER
Hey, I'm peachy, pork pie.

BOONE
Guys, knock it off!

SAWYER
Stay out of this, metro!

Jack runs up.

JACK
Hey! What's going on?

He breaks Sawyer and Hurley apart.

HURLEY
Jethro here's hoarding the last of the peanuts.

SAWYER
My own stash. I found it in there.

He points to the fuselage.

JACK
What about the rest of the food?

HURLEY
There is no rest of the food, dude. We kinda...
ate it all.

SHANNON
What?

Everyone starts murmuring.

JACK
Okay, everybody. Just calm down. We...

SAYID
We can find food. There are plenty of things
on this island we can use for sustenance.

SAWYER
And exactly how are we gonna find this sustenance?

He sits on a chair from the plane. A knife whizzes by to land in the seat next to Sawyer's head. Everyone looks to Locke.

LOCKE
We hunt.

SAWYER
How'd you get that knife on the plane?

Jack removes it from the seat.

LOCKE
Checked it.

Jack hands the knife to Locke.

JACK
You either have very good aim, or very bad aim, Mr. ...

MICHAEL
Locke. His name is Locke.

JACK
Okay, Mr. Locke. What is it we're hunting?

LOCKE
We know there are wild boar on the island. Razorbacks,
by the look of them. The ones who came into the camp
last night were piglets, 100, 150 pounds each. Which
means that there's a mother nearby – a 250 pound rat
with scimitar-like tusks and a surly disposition who
would love nothing more than to eviscerate anything
comes near. A boar's usual mode of attack is to circle
around and charge from behind, so I figure it'll take
at least three of us to distract her long enough for me
to flank one of the piglets, pin it, and slit its throat.

SAWYER
(to Jack)
And you gave him his knife back?

JACK
Well, if you've got a better idea...

SAWYER
Better than three of you wandering into the magic forest
to bag a hunk o' ham with nothing but a little-bitty
hunting knife? Hell, no. It's the best idea I've
ever heard.

Locke uses his foot to open the metal suitcase that is FILLED WITH LARGE KNIVES.

HURLEY
Who is this guy?

TIME CUT TO:

INT. OFFICE BUILDING - CUBICLE - MORNING

The phone rings. Locke answers it.

LOCKE
Yes?

GL12
Colonel Locke. Is this line secure?

Locke looks around.

LOCKE
Line secure, GL12. Go ahead.

GL12
Target area is acquired. Maneuvers are a go
for 1300 hours. Repeat, we are a go.

LOCKE
Roger that. We'll convene at the usual rendezvous
point at 1300 hours.

The view opens up to show an office full of cubicles.

RANDY
Locke! I told you. I need those TPS reports done
by noon today. Not 12:30, not 12:15. Noon.

LOCKE
I heard you the first time, Randy.

RANDY
And no personal calls during office hours, Colonel.

END ACT ONE

ACT TWO

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - DAY

Kate puts a knife in a sheath on her belt. Jack wakes up.

JACK
So, hunting boar now, huh?

KATE
Who says this is my first time boar hunting?

JACK
Uh-huh. Tell me something. How come anytime there's
a hike into the heart of darkness, you sign up? You
know what's in there.

KATE
Actually, I don't, and neither do you.

JACK
What's your feel on our new friend?

KATE
He seems to know what he's doing.

JACK
Call me paranoid, but anyone who packs a suitcase
full of knives...

KATE
If I didn't know any better, I'd say you're worried
about me, Jack.

JACK
If I didn't know any better, I'd say you have a problem
staying in one place for very long, Kate. So, you want
to tell me why you're really going?

Kate bares her backpack and shows Jack an antenna.

KATE
Sayid gave me this so he can triangulate the distress
signal we heard. Find the source.

JACK
This isn't about boars.

KATE
I'm a vegetarian.

Kate walks away. We see Michael and Walt. Michael is packing.

WALT
But why can't I come?

MICHAEL
'Cause I said so.

He sees Sun.

MICHAEL (cont'd)
Oh, uh, hi. Hi. Excuse me. Um, look, I am going off,
away to a hunt...

He uses large gestures to demonstrate where he's going and what he's doing.

MICHAEL (cont'd)
...and, uh, I was wondering if you could keep an eye
on my boy, Walt.

He touches Walt's head.

MICHAEL (cont'd)
And I'm Michael. Anyway, could you watch him for me
until I come back?

SUN
(in Korean)
[Ah, I will be taking a good care of your son. Yes.]

MICHAEL
Sorry, I don't understand, but you're cool with
this, right?

SUN
(in Korean)
[Ah, yes.]

WALT
I don't need a babysitter.

MICHAEL
Come on, man. Vincent needs you here. And hey,
cheer up. This will give me a chance to get to know
your friend Mr. Locke a little better.

SUN
(in Korean, to Walt)
[Don't worry. Your dad will be fine.]

WALT
Yeah, whatever.

Jack is piling wood near the fuselage. Claire walks up.

CLAIRE
Excuse me, doctor?

JACK
It's Jack. Claire, right?

CLAIRE
Yeah.

JACK
How's the...?

CLAIRE
Oh, he's good. Yeah. Thanks. Um, I thought maybe
you should see this. Someone found it in there.
They were collecting all the belongings. They're
wedding plans for Steve and Kristin. They were on
the plane, sitting a couple of rows behind me. I
remember because they looked so happy.

JACK
I don't understand, Claire, what I'm supposed to
do with this.

CLAIRE
Oh, well, some of us were wondering if maybe we should
do some kind of memorial service or something. You
could lead it.

JACK
Uh, no. I don't think...

CLAIRE
Well, you know, just a few words. Or even we could
just read off names from passports and driver's –

JACK
Look, it's not my thing.

CLAIRE
Oh, okay. Maybe I'll do it.

JACK
Yeah. Sounds fine. Whatever everybody wants.

Boone sees Rose sitting by herself. Shannon is doing a crossword puzzle.

BOONE
That woman is still sitting there.

SHANNON
Uh-huh.

BOONE
Her husband was on the plane.

SHANNON
Great.

BOONE
Are you listening to me?

SHANNON
What's a four letter word for "I don't care"?

BOONE
I just think somebody should go talk to her.

SHANNON
I nominate you, Captain. You just can't help
yourself, can you?

BOONE
Yeah, well at least you don't have to worry about
starving with me taking care of you.

SHANNON
I'm not gonna starve.

BOONE
Right. What are you gonna eat?

SHANNON
The ocean's full of fish.

BOONE
Hate to break it to you. The ocean is not gonna
take your gold card.

SHANNON
You really don't think I can catch a fish?

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

In the forest, Locke is scratching ground with his knife as Kate and Michael look on.

KATE
You find something?

LOCKE
The ground here's been rooted up. That's how boars
get the majority of their food. They dig. Afterwards,
they generally wallow in the dirt and rub up against
the trees, scoring it with their tusks.

MICHAEL
Okay, so what's all that mean?

LOCKE
It means we're close.

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - DAY

Away from the others, Charlie is trying to pull out his heroin for another hit, but is interrupted by Shannon walking up to him.

SHANNON
Hi.

CHARLIE
Hi. Shannon, right?

SHANNON
Yeah. Are you doing anything?

CHARLIE
Me, no. I was just, uh... What are you doing?

SHANNON
Um, I was just gonna go for a walk. You wanna come?

CHARLIE
Yeah. Yes. Sure.

SHANNON
Can I ask you something?

They walk to the beach.

CHARLIE
I wondered when this was gonna come up. Yes, I
am the bass guitarist in...

SHANNON
Yeah, do you know anything about fishing?

CHARLIE
What? Fishing? Uh, my granddad used to take me
out. He taught me everything he knows. Everything
he knew. He's dead now, God rest his soul. Yeah,
I'm like a fishing fiend. You know, I mean, England's
an island. So I just throw it in and fish.

SHANNON
Good.

Boone walks up to Jack, who's preparing the fuselage.

BOONE
Hey, doc. You got a second?

JACK
What's up?

BOONE
That woman's been sitting over there by herself.
Maybe she's having trouble dealing with her husband.
I don't think she's had anything to eat or drink.
Think maybe you could go talk to her?

JACK
Why me? I'm not a psychiatrist. Maybe you should.

BOONE
I just thought you might want to do it. You're
the one that saved her life.

Jack walks to Rose. She's fingering a ring on a chain around her neck.

JACK
Hi. Rose, right?
Jack puts a blanket around her.

JACK (cont'd)
You remember me? Seat 23A. I was the guy that
told you not to worry about the turbulence. Everybody's
getting pretty worried about you, Rose. If you want
to be alone, that's fine. But you have to take care
of yourself. You should really drink.

She ignores him.

JACK (cont'd)
Okay. We don't have to talk. Let's just sit
for awhile.

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

Locke, Kate and Michael are in the forest.

KATE
Your son, how's he handling all this?

MICHAEL
A hell of a lot better than I am.

KATE
You must be proud. He's a brave kid.

MICHAEL
Yeah. I can't take credit for that. I wasn't part of
his life until his mother passed away. Two weeks ago.

KATE
I'm sorry. I didn't know.

MICHAEL
That's okay. They were living in the city the
past couple of years. I flew out last week to...

Growling is heard on screen.

MICHAEL (cont'd)
...go get them. What were you doing in Australia?

LOCKE
Shhh!

Growling continues. There is rustling. Locke motions where Kate and Michael should head.

MICHAEL
Hey, quit giving us the steal signal!

A boar rushes them. Locke pulls Kate out of the way, but Michael is cut on his leg by the tusks. Michael is groaning.

MICHAEL
God. Oh, God. Oh.
Ah, how bad is it?

KATE
It's bad. Don't move.

TIME CUT TO:

INT. OFFICE BUILDING - BREAK ROOM - 1300 HOURS

GL12
Move. You've got to move, Colonel. Your troops
are across enemy lines.

LOCKE
Patience, a quality which you lack, GL12, is
the hallmark of a leader.

Randy walks in.

RANDY
Hallmark, huh? Tell me more about being a leader,
Locke. And while you're at it, tell me about this
Colonel thing. I perused your file in human resources –
you've never been in any of the armed forces.

LOCKE
I'm just playing a game, Randy. It's my lunch hour.
I can play a game.

RANDY
Yeah. Tell me, what's a, um, walkabout?
(reads off a magazine)
"Experience the dream journeys of the fabled
Australian outback."

LOCKE
You have no right taking that off my desk.

RANDY
So you wander around hunting and gathering food,
right? On foot?

LOCKE
Not that you would understand, but walkabout is a
journey of spiritual renewal where one derives
strength from the earth and becomes inseparable from
it. I have vacation days. I'm going, Randy. I
already made a reservation.

GL12
Wow, John, you're really doing it, huh?

LOCKE
Yeah.

GL12
You tell Helen yet?

RANDY
Helen? What's this Locke? You've actually got a
woman in your life?

LOCKE
That's none of your business.

RANDY
What is it with you, Locke? Why do you torture
yourself? I mean, imagining you're some hunter,
and walkabouts. Wake up. You can't do any of that.

LOCKE
Norman Croucher.

RANDY
What? Norman what?

LOCKE
Norman Croucher. Norman Croucher. Double amputee,
no legs. He climbed to the top of Mt. Everest. Why?
It was his destiny.

RANDY
That's what you think you got, old man? Destiny?

LOCKE
Just don't tell me what I can't do.

TIME CUT TO:

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

Locke is on his back, stunned.

KATE
John, he's hurt. John? John, can you hear
me? Locke! John, are you okay? Locke?

LOCKE
I'm fine. I'm fine, Helen. I just got the wind
knocked out of me is all.

KATE
Helen?

She is trying to bandage Michael's leg.

LOCKE
What?

KATE
You called me Helen.

LOCKE
Did I? Which way'd that boar go?

KATE
Uh-uh. Michael's hurt. We have to get him
back to camp.

LOCKE
Yeah, you're taking him back to camp. I'm gonna
get that boar.

KATE
What are you talking about?

LOCKE
I'm fine. I can do this.

KATE
John, you can't.

Locke starts to walk deeper into the forest.

LOCKE
Don't tell me what I can't do.

END ACT TWO

ACT THREE

EXT. ISLAND - OCEAN - DAY

A stick is shoved into the water.

CHARLIE
Get it?

Hurley's trying to spear fish.

HURLEY
Quit asking me that.

CHARLIE
Sorry. It's just you said you knew how to fish.

HURLEY
Yeah, off the Santa Monica pier with my old man and a
fishing pole and bait. Never had to try to poke one
with a sharp stick.

CHARLIE
Well, uh, really appreciate you helping me out. Thanks.

HURLEY
Hey, anything that keeps me far away from that fuselage
and that freakin' redneck jerk.

He tries to spear a fish, but misses.

HURLEY (cont'd)
Ah! Damn it!

He smacks the water with the stick.

HURLEY (cont'd)
Crap! Crap! Son of a...

CHARLIE
You want me to have a go?

HURLEY
(calmly)
Knock yourself out.

CHARLIE
All right.

HURLEY
Okay, here comes one. Put your weight into it.
Easy, wait for it. Wait! Now!

Charlie lunges and submerges his whole self into the water. Charlie comes up and Hurley laughs.

HURLEY
Dude, you gotta try to pin it.

CHARLIE
Did you see how close I was? You set out to quarter it.

HURLEY
Dude. Yeah.

They both laugh.

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - DAY

Claire and Sayid are going through some luggage.

CLAIRE
Excuse me. Your name is Sayid, right?

SAYID
Yes.

CLAIRE
(holds up an envelope)
I just found this. It's got your name on it.

SAYID
I thought I lost this. Thank you.

CLAIRE
Sure.

Sayid opens the envelope. It has pictures of an Iraqi woman.

Jack and Rose are by themselves.

ROSE
His fingers swell.

JACK
Sorry?

ROSE
Bernard. My husband. His hands swell up whenever we fly.

She looks at the ring on her necklace.

JACK
The altitude.

ROSE
He started having me hold on to his wedding ring
whenever we took a plane trip. I always wore it
around my neck for safe keeping, just until we
landed. You know, doctor, you don't have to keep
your promise.

JACK
Promise?

ROSE
The one you made me on the plane, to keep me company
until my husband got back from the restroom. I'm
letting you off the hook.

JACK
Ha. Well, you're not gonna get rid of me that easily.
Rose, you shouldn't be out here alone. You're suffering
from post-traumatic shock.

ROSE
Aren't we all?

JACK
Ha, ha. Yeah, I guess we are.

ROSE
You have a nice way about you. A good soul. Patient,
caring. I suppose that's why you became a doctor.

JACK
Thanks, but I was just kinda born into it. Family business.

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

Locke is on his own, hunting boar.

TIME CUT TO:

INT. LOCKE'S HOME - BEDROOM - NIGHT

Locke is on the phone talking to someone.

LOCKE
I have never felt so alive. Getting to finally tell
Randy off was, uh, life-changing. I mean it. Now
I'm free to do all those things I ever wanted to do,
things that I know I was destined to do. Like we
talked about, Helen.

HELEN
It's wonderful, John. I'm happy for you, really.

LOCKE
I haven't even told you the best part. Do you remember
the authentic aboriginal walkabout?

HELEN
Sure. It's all you've talked about for weeks.

LOCKE
Yeah, well, I'm gonna do it. I'm flying to Australia at
the end of the week, and I've, uh, bought two tickets.
(pause)
Helen?

HELEN
John, we've talked about this. I like you.

LOCKE
Yeah, I know.

HELEN
And I've enjoyed talking with you these past few months.

LOCKE
So have I. Eight months.

HELEN
I'm not allowed to meet customers.

LOCKE
A customer? Is that what I am to you?

HELEN
This isn't really normal. I mean, this isn't what I do.
I don't...Maybe you should find a therapist.

LOCKE
Wait. I have therapists.

HELEN
John...

LOCKE
I thought you understood, Helen. You know me
better than anyone.

HELEN
John, if we talk any longer, I'm gonna have to charge
you for another hour. That's another $89.95. You can't
afford that.

LOCKE
Look, I don't care about the money. I just...

HELEN
I'm sorry, John. I have to go.

LOCKE
Helen, Helen.
(she hangs up)
Helen. Helen!

He slams the phone down.

TIME CUT TO:

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

Kate is helping Michael back to the beach.

KATE
Hey, wait a minute.

MICHAEL
What?

KATE
Just rest here for a minute.

MICHAEL
I think the guy with the gimpy leg should be deciding
when we rest.

Kate undoes her belt.

MICHAEL (cont'd)
Hey, what are you doing?

Kate pulls the knife off of the belt.

KATE
Trying to boost the transceiver signal. I'm gonna
climb this tree and attach an antenna.

MICHAEL
You're gonna climb that?

KATE
Yeah. Don't worry. Climbed a lot worse.

There is loud growling and stomping. Kate drops and ruins the antenna.

KATE (cont'd)
Locke.

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY - MEANWHILE

Locke is still hunting the boar. He hears squealing and starts to run to it. He hears the monster and it appears to approach him. It's shot from the monster's point of view, so we don't see it. Locke just stares.

END ACT THREE

ACT FOUR

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - DAY

Sawyer walks up to Claire.

SAWYER
Hey, uh...

CLAIRE
Hey.

SAWYER
These were, um, I found these the other day
when I was...Ah, hell, just take it.

CLAIRE
Thank you.

She takes the wallet from him.

Walt is sitting next to Sun, who's doing something with a plant.

WALT
What, what is that?

Sun mimics brushing teeth with the plant.

WALT (cont'd)
Oh, I get it. It's like toothpaste.

SUN
(in Korean)
Chee-yak.
[Toothpaste.]

WALT
(repeating Korean word)
Chee-ya?

Kate and Michael arrive at the beach.

KATE
Doing so good.

MICHAEL
Thanks.

Hurley runs to Kate and Michael.

WALT
Dad!

He runs to them too.

HURLEY
So, like, what happened out there?

He helps Michael walk.

WALT
Dad!

MICHAEL
Hey!

WALT
Your leg's all messed up. Does it hurt?

MICHAEL
It's okay. It's not as bad as it looks.

SAWYER
The mighty huntress returns. What's for dinner, hon?

KATE
Not now.

Kate walks away.

WALT
So it was like a boar fight?

MICHAEL
Not so much a fight. It was more, you know, like
me getting gored.

WALT
So, um, where's Mr. Locke?

MICHAEL
I...

Boone walks up to Shannon.

BOONE
I don't think that hunt went very well. That bald
guy never came back.

SHANNON
Wait. They didn't bring back any food at all?

BOONE
Did you hear what I just said? Somebody might have
died out there.

SHANNON
Well, we're all gonna die if somebody doesn't do something.

Charlie walks up.

CHARLIE
There you are. As promised, you and I will be dining
on fresh catch of the day tonight.

SHANNON
Oh my gosh!

CHARLIE
I hope you don’t mind al fresco. Yeah, it was
no problem. You know what? That one actually gave me
a hell of a tussle...

Shannon shoves a fist towards Boone

CHARLIE (cont'd)
...but you have to get inside the mind of the
fish, you know?

BOONE
(to Shannon)
I don't believe you!

CHARLIE
I got it in the shallows. I cornered it.

SHANNON
(to Boone)
Oh, what's the matter? Can't stand to see me fending
for myself?

BOONE
(to Charlie)
I am so sorry about this, seriously.

Charlie looks hurt.

CHARLIE
What? No, it's okay.

SHANNON
What are you apologizing to him for?

BOONE
For you. For using this poor guy like you use
everyone else.

SHANNON
Oh, whatever.

BOONE
Somewhere in your twisted little brain you think this
proves that you can take care of yourself.

He walks away.

SHANNON
(calling after him)
I told you I'd catch a fish, didn't I?

She walks away. Charlie is left alone.

Jack and Rose are together.

JACK
Rose, after the sun goes down, we're going to burn the
fuselage. It's just something that we have to do. There's
gonna be a memorial service back at the camp for those, for
those who didn't make it. For everyone to say goodbye.

ROSE
I'd like to be there for that.

JACK
Okay.

He gets up and helps Rose stand up.

JACK (cont'd)
Maybe if you wanted to say something, you know, about
your husband.

ROSE
What?

JACK
I'm just saying, if you wanted to say goodbye to Bernard.

ROSE
Doctor, my husband is not dead.

JACK
Rose, he was in the tail section of the plane. It broke
off in mid-flight. I'm sorry, but everyone who was in the
rear of the plane is gone.

ROSE
They're probably thinking the same thing about us.

She walks away. Jack sees a man in a suit near the forest edge of the beach. He's just standing there.

ROSE (cont'd)
Doctor?

Jack looks at her.

ROSE (cont'd)
You coming?

Jack looks back and the man is gone.

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - LATER

Kate gives Sayid the broken antenna.

KATE
I'm sorry. I guess I should have gotten the warrantee.

SAYID
I suppose I'll just try again. Of course, I have no
welding iron, no rivets, scorched wiring and it seems
I must continue to lie to anyone who asks me what it
is I'm actually doing!

He throws the antenna on the ground.

KATE
Sayid, we'll try it again.

Jack walks up.

JACK
Kate!

SAYID
Excuse me.

Sayid walks away.

KATE
Hey.

JACK
You okay?

He grabs her face to look at her cuts.

KATE
Is this when you say, "I told you so"?

JACK
No, I'm not big on rubbing it in.

He starts to walk away and Kate grabs his arm.

KATE
Locke, um, Locke's gone. That thing. It was moving in
his direction. There wasn't time...

She looks at the group.

KATE (cont'd)
What's going on?

JACK
Fuselage is ready to go. Some of the others decided, uh,
I guess there's gonna be some words said over the fire.

KATE
That's good.

JACK
Names read, I think.

He looks to the forest edge and sees the man in a suit walking into the forest.

KATE
I just don't think that they're ready to hear about
some of the things that we...

Jack starts to run towards the man in the suit.

KATE (cont'd)
Jack? Jack?

Locke comes out from between the bushes, dragging a boar. Dirty and triumphant.

JACK
Locke.

END ACT FOUR

TAG

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - NIGHT

They're in a group, gathered near the fuselage. Claire is reading names. Hurley is next to her.

CLAIRE
Judith Martha Wexler from Denton, Texas. I guess she was
gonna catch a connecting flight. Um. She wore corrective
lenses and she was an organ donor, or at least would have
been. Steve and Kristin. I don't know their last name, but,
uh, they were really in love –

The shot shows the burning fuselage.

CLAIRE (cont'd)
– and were gonna be married. At least wherever they are
now they're not alone. They got each other. Emanuel
Rafael Ortiz. Los Angeles –

Away from the others, Charlie takes a hit of heroin.

CLAIRE (cont'd)
– turned 32 just last week. Must have had children.
Video store receipt lists overdue charges for "Willy Wonka"
and "The Little Princess." Looks like he, uh, hadn't
traveled much.

Charlie rejoins the group.

CLAIRE (cont'd)
As far as I can tell from his passport...

Claire fades out as we focus on:

KATE
(to Charlie)
You seen Jack?

Charlie shakes his head.

MICHAEL
(to Locke)
Nice work.

LOCKE
What?

MICHAEL
The boar. Nice work, you know. Killing it. Just thought
I should say something. So that thing, the, uh, monster,
whatever, she said it was headed right towards you. Did
you see anything? Get any kind of look at it?

LOCKE
No.

TIME CUT TO:

INT. AUSTRALIAN TRAVEL COMPANY OFFICE - DAY

TRAVEL AGENT
The walkabouts we arrange here are not just some
stroll through the park. It's trekking across vast
stretches of desert, rafting bloody treacherous waters...

LOCKE
You've got no idea who you're talking to. I'm well
aware of what's involved. Believe me. I probably
know more than you on the subject.

TRAVEL AGENT
In any case, it's a trying ordeal for someone in peak
physical condition. That alone...

LOCKE
Look, I booked this tour a month ago. You've already
got my money. Now I demand a place on that bus.

TRAVEL AGENT
You misrepresented yourself.

LOCKE
I never lied.

TRAVEL AGENT
By omission, Mr. Locke. You neglected to tell us
about your condition.

LOCKE
My condition is not an issue. I've lived with it for
four years. It's never kept me from doing anything.

TRAVEL AGENT
Well, unfortunately, it is an issue for the insurance
company. I can't keep the bus waiting any longer. It
isn't fair to the other –

LOCKE
Don't talk to me about fair!

TRAVEL AGENT
I'll get you on a plane back to Sydney on our dime.
It's the best I can...

LOCKE
No, I don't want to go back to Sydney. Look, I've been
preparing for this for years. Just put me on the bus
right now. I can do this.

TRAVEL AGENT
No, you can't.

LOCKE
Hey. Hey. Don't you walk away from me.

The travel agent walks out of the office and we see Locke is in a wheelchair.

LOCKE (cont'd)
You don't know who you're dealing with! Don't ever tell
me what I can't do, ever. This is destiny. This is
destiny. This is my destiny! Listen, I'm supposed to
do this, damn it! Don't tell me what I can't do. Don't
tell me what I can't...

The bus leaves.

TIME CUT TO:

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - DAY Just after the crash. Locke is in the sand, wiggles his toes and stands up.

JACK
You, come on! Come over here! Give me a hand!

Locke runs to help.

TIME CUT TO:

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - NIGHT - PRESENT

Locke watches the wheelchair burn.
