TEASER

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - DAY

Kate is carrying bananas near the water's edge. She sees some clothes and the book, Watership Down, lying on the sand. She picks up the book.

SAWYER
(calls from in the water)
Hell of a book!
(exiting the water)
It's about bunnies.

KATE
It must be cold without your trunks.

SAWYER
You bet. How about you come a little closer
and warm me up?

KATE
You sure know how to make a girl feel special.

Sawyer puts on his jeans.

TIME CUT TO:

INT. BEDROOM - DAY

Sawyer's in bed with a woman, Jessica.

JESSICA
(chuckles)
You're incredible, Sawyer.

SAWYER
I love you. Look at you. What do you want
right now?

JESSICA
How could I want anything else?
(they kiss)
Oh, uh-oh, baby.

SAWYER
Uh-oh what?

JESSICA
I thought you had a meeting

SAWYER
Yeah, but it's not 'til 3:30

JESSICA
Baby, it's 3:28.

SAWYER
(looks at the clock)
Damn it!

Sawyer gets out of bed and starts to dress.

SAWYER (cont'd)
Damn it, baby. Why don't you just, uh...

JESSICA
No, just go. You go, okay? I'll stay here.
Order room service, get fat.

SAWYER
Why don't you order a chocolate sundae. When I get
back I'll use you as a dish.

They laugh. Sawyer grabs his briefcase and it falls open spilling lots of cash on the floor. Jess is shocked.

SAWYER
You weren't exactly supposed to see that.

TIME CUT TO:

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

Sawyer is walking through the trees. He hears a loud rustling. He runs toward the noise and comes up on Boone going through his stash of stuff.

SAWYER
What are you doing in my stuff, son?

INT. ISLAND - CAVES - DAY

JACK
This is gonna hurt.

Jack is putting hydrogen peroxide on the cut on Sayid's head.

JACK (cont'd)
Ready to tell me what happened?

SAYID
We were trying to find the source of the distress
call. I saw the flare from the beach, and then the
flare from Sawyer's position in the jungle. I switched
on my antenna, activated the transceiver, and then...
darkness. Whoever hit me came from behind.

JACK
They destroyed the equipment?

SAYID
Yes.

JACK
Listen, we're gonna figure this out, but don't do any--

SAYID
I will do what I need to do to find the man responsible.

SHANNON
We need some help over here!

She helps carry in Boone, who's been beaten.

JACK
Come on.

Jack and Sayid help Boone sit down inside the caves.

JACK (cont'd)
What happened?

BOONE
Sawyer.

ACT ONE

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - DAY

Claire is writing in her journal. Charlie walks up with two water bottles.

CHARLIE
Morning delivery.

CLAIRE
Ah, you're sweet. Thanks.

Charlie hands her a bottle of water and sits.

CHARLIE
Well, I figured, in your condition, with the
extra baggage, you know.

CLAIRE
Well, I can still walk.

CHARLIE
Barely. Anyway, I worry about you out here.
You know, it's very...sunny.

CLAIRE
Thus my hat.

CHARLIE
You know, there's plenty of hats in the caves and
we got a doctor there as well. That will come
in handy.

CLAIRE
I like the beach, Charlie.

CHARLIE
Yeah, who wouldn't want to spend the day with
sand fleas?

CLAIRE
I want to be here for when we get rescued.

CHARLIE
When we get rescued. Right.

INT. ISLAND - CAVES - DAY

Jack is cleaning up Boone's wounds.

BOONE
Jack, it's fine. It's just a scrape.

JACK
Yeah, lots of scrapes today. I'm running out
of peroxide.

BOONE
He just jumped me, man.

JACK
Why?

BOONE
Shannon has asthma.

JACK
Asthma?

BOONE
Yeah.

JACK
I've never seen her have an attack before.

BOONE
Because she had an inhaler. She sneaks hits when no
one's looking. She's been embarrassed about it since
she was a little kid. I guess breathing's not cool.

JACK
Had an inhaler?

BOONE
It ran out a couple days ago. But it had four refills, which
should have been enough for a couple months. But she always
forgets her medication. So I put it in my suitcase. Today
I see that jackass reading Watership Down --

JACK
Wait. You're losing me.

BOONE
It was in my bags, the stuff that I checked. If he has my book,
he has my luggage. If he has the luggage, he has the inhalers.
Her breathing got really rough today, man. If she has an attack
it's not gonna be good.

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - TENT - DAY

Sawyer's sitting in his tent smoking and reading a hand-written letter. Jack comes up and starts going though his things.

JACK
Where is it?

Sawyer folds the letter up.

SAWYER
Hey, doc. Long time no see.

JACK
Where is it?

Sawyer puts the letter away.

SAWYER
Where's what?

JACK
The girl's asthma medicine. Shannon, her
inhalers.

SAWYER
Oh, that.

JACK
You attacked a kid for trying to help his
sick sister.

SAWYER
No. I whooped a thief 'cause he was going
through my stuff.

JACK
Yours? What makes it yours?

SAWYER
Which I had to move because everybody wants
to help themselves.

JACK
What? You think you can just take something out
of a suitcase and that makes it yours?

SAWYER
Look! I don't know what kind of commie share-fest you're
running over in cave-town but down here possession's 9/10ths.
And a man's got a right to protect his property.

JACK
Get up!

SAWYER
Why, you want to see who's taller?

JACK
Get up!

SAWYER
You sure you want to make this your problem, doc?

JACK
Oh, yeah. I'm sure.

Sawyer stands and Kate walks up.

KATE
Hey! What's going on here?

Jack walks away and Kate follows.

TIME CUT TO:

INT. BEDROOM - DAY

Resume previous flashback:

JESSICA
You told me you were going to Baton Rouge to close a deal.

SAWYER
Just trust me. There isn't any time to explain. I'm already
late. If I miss this meeting the whole deals a bust. All right?

Jessica gets up and starts to dress.

SAWYER (cont'd)
That's everything I have. $140,000. There's an oil mining
operation in the Gulf of Mexico. Drilling platforms.
$300,000 buys you one share but as soon as you invest, a
government-sponsored fund kicks in and triples your money
in two weeks. Triples it.

JESSICA
$300,000?

SAWYER
Yeah.

JESSICA
You got $140,000?

SAWYER
I found an investor in Toronto. He wants in fifty-fifty.
Two weeks, we'll be splitting almost a million bucks.
Jess, this is my chance.

JESSICA
There's another option.

SAWYER
Yeah, what's that?

JESSICA
That I give you the $160,000 and we split the profit.

SAWYER
Yeah, and how in the hell are you gonna scare up
$160,000 bucks?

JESSICA
My husband.

TIME CUT TO:

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - DAY

Kate and Jack are walking.

JACK
I'm gonna kill him.

KATE
That's not gonna help us get the medicine.

JACK
Maybe not, but it'll feel good.

KATE
So what's stopping you?

JACK
We're not savages, Kate. Not yet.

KATE
Let me talk to Sawyer.

JACK
What makes you think he's gonna listen to you?

KATE
He says we have a connection.

JACK
Do you?

KATE
(scoffs)
Please.

LATER

Sawyer's chopping wood and Kate walks up.

KATE
What do you want?

SAWYER
Excuse me?

KATE
What do you want, Sawyer?

SAWYER
Freckles, I got so many answers to that question I wouldn't
even know where to start.

KATE
What do you want for the inhalers?

SAWYER
Ah. Good question. Hang on a tick. What do I want?
A kiss ought to do it.

KATE
What?

SAWYER
A kiss from you right now.

KATE
I don't buy it.

SAWYER
Buy what?

KATE
The act. You try too hard, Sawyer. I ask you to help a
woman who can't breathe and you want me to kiss you?
Nobody's that disgusting. I've seen you, you know.

SAWYER
Seen me what?

KATE
With that piece of paper. The one you keep in your pocket.
I've seen the expression on your face when you read it and
how carefully you fold it up. It means something to you.
So you can play games all you want, but I know there's a human
being in there somewhere. Give me the medication.

SAWYER
You think you understand me?

KATE
Yeah. I think I --

SAWYER
Shut up! You want to know what kind of human
being I am?

He takes out the letter and hands it to her.

SAWYER (cont'd)
Read it. Read it out loud.

KATE
(reading)
"Dear Mr. Sawyer, you don't know who I am, but I know who
you are, and I know what you've done. You had sex with
my mother and then you stole my dad's money all away. So
he got angry and he killed my mother and then he killed
himself, too."

She lowers the letter.

SAWYER
Don't stop now. You're getting to the good part.

KATE
(reading)
"All I know is your name but one of these days I'm gonna
find you and give you this letter so you'll remember what
you've done to me. You killed my parents, Mr. Sawyer."

Sawyer takes back the letter.

SAWYER
Now how about that kiss?

Kate won't look him in the eye.

SAWYER (cont'd)
I didn't think so.

END ACT ONE

ACT TWO

EXT. ISLAND - CAVES - NIGHT

Locke is sharpening the end of a stick. Sayid walks up.

SAYID
Locke, where were you last night? Around sunset?

LOCKE
Well, I'm afraid the only witness to my whereabouts is the
boar that I was skinning for our dinner. I heard you were
trying to send out a distress call, so it would seem
whoever attacked you has a reason for not wanting to get
off the island. Maybe someone who is profiting from our
current circumstances. And from what I've seen, you and
Mr. Sawyer share a certain animosity.

SAYID
No. He has an alibi. Just before I was struck he set
off a bottle rocket -- a signal we'd worked out -- two
kilometers away. He couldn't have had the time to go from...

LOCKE
Unless he found a way to time-delay the fuse on his rocket.

SAYID
How could he possibly have --

LOCKE
Anyone who watches television knows how to improvise
a slow fuse. Use a cigarette.

Locke offers his knife to Sayid

LOCKE (cont'd)
Just in case there's a next time.

Sayid takes the knife.

INT. ISLAND - CAVES - NIGHT

Shannon is gasping and coughing -- asthma attack. Jack is searching through the meds.

BOONE
Come on, Jack.
(to Shannon)
Just try to breathe. Breathe. Come on, Shan,
work with me.

Sawyer walks into camp to get water.

JACK
(to Sawyer)
Give me the inhalers. Now.

SAWYER
Hell, I wondered when you were gonna stop
asking nice.

Jack punches Sawyer.

SAWYER (cont'd)
Well, it's about time, cowboy. I've been telling
you since day one we're in the wild. Didn't think
you had it in you.

Jack punches him again.

SAWYER (cont'd)
That all you got?

Jack shakes his head and walks away.

TIME CUT TO:

INT. RESTAURANT - DAY

Sawyer is eating lunch with Jessica and her husband David.

SAWYER
I'm not sure this is such a good idea.

JESSICA
Why not?

SAWYER
Because business between friends is always
a little sticky.
(to Jess' husband, David)
I don't know you well, but I know your wife.
Working with her at the auto dealership. I'm
just not sure I'm comfortable with this.

DAVID
Louisiana will invest 2/3rds of the drilling
costs. What is this, a loophole?

SAWYER
Look, David. You're reluctant. I get it.
You got your lumberyard. You don't need this.

JESSICA
(to David)
We should do this.

DAVID
Jess, I don't even know this guy.

JESSICA
(to Sawyer)
Show him the cash.

Sawyer unlocks his briefcase and David cracks it open to look.

DAVID
How do I know this is real?

SAWYER
The money? Hell, how about you hold onto it for
a night? Check it out. I want you to feel secure.
(pause)
You know what? Let's not do this. I've got another
investor who's already committed.

JESSICA
David!

SAWYER
(puts several $100 bills on the table)
That should cover lunch and I'll see you Monday.
(he gets up from the table)
David.

Sawyer starts to walk away.

DAVID
Wait.

Sawyer stops and smiles, his back to the table.

TIME CUT TO:

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - DAY

Charlie and Claire are walking together and playing a game.

CLAIRE
Warm, fluffy towels. Your turn.

CHARLIE
Uh, banoffie pie.

They start to hang clothes they've just washed.

CLAIRE
Is food the only thing that you miss?

CHARLIE
You're pregnant. I mean, do you not crave anything?
Pickles? Fried ice cream? Chocolate?

CLAIRE
Peanut butter. I'm the only Australian who loves
peanut butter.

CHARLIE
I could get you peanut butter.

CLAIRE
Yeah, sure you can.

CHARLIE
Yes, I can. And when I get you peanut butter, you
have to vacate this sandy shore of depression and
move to the caves. Deal?

CLAIRE
(thinking)
Deal.

INT. ISLAND - CAVES - DAY

Shannon is suffering from an asthma attack.

BOONE
(calls out)
Help! She's not breathing.

Jack and Hurley come running.

BOONE (cont'd)
The attacks are getting worse.

JACK
Shannon, listen to me. Look at me. Look at me.
You need to listen now. This isn't just the
asthma. It's anxiety. It's in your head.

SHANNON
No.

JACK
Yes. You know that your medicine's run out and
you're panicking, but Shannon, Shannon. Look at
me. But we can fight this together, okay? Nod
your head, Shannon.
(she nods)
Good. Breathe in.

BOONE
She needs her inhaler.

JACK
Boone! Breathe in through the nose slowly. No,
no, no. In through the nose like this.
(demonstrates)
You can do this Shannon. You can do it. In
through the nose.

Shannon breathes in through her nose.

JACK (cont'd)
You got your breath. Your color's coming back.
See, I knew you could do this. You feel it?

SHANNON
Yeah.

JACK
It's passing. Okay, again. In through the nose.
(Shannon does it again)
All right. Just keep doing that. Keep breathing
like that. That's perfect. Good job.

Jack stands up and pulls Boone aside.

JACK
Keep her relaxed. Do not let her panic.

BOONE
Yeah.

HURLEY
Wow, man. That was awesome. I mean, that was like
a... Jedi moment.

Jack walks away from the caves and Sayid follows.

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

SAYID
Jack! What will happen if she doesn't get her medicine?

Jack just looks at him and doesn't say anything.

SAYID (cont'd)
Then we have to make Sawyer give it to us.

JACK
That's what I'm gonna do.

SAYID
no, not you. Me. I served 5 years in the Republican Guard.

JACK
I thought you were a communications officer.

SAYID
Part of my training entailed getting the enemy to communicate.
Just give me 10 minutes with him. He'll give us the medicine.
(pause)
Is that a yes?

JACK
Yes.

END ACT TWO

ACT THREE

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

Charlie and Hurley are walking back to the caves.

HURLEY
Food from the plane's been gone over a week, dude.

CHARLIE
What, no secret stash for emergencies? You and
Jack have got a bunch of stuff in that cave.

HURLEY
Sorry, man. No peanut butter, no peanuts,
no nothing.

CHARLIE
Yeah, but there's gotta be something. I mean,
look at you.

They both stop walking.

HURLEY
Look at what?

CHARLIE
No, no. Listen...

HURLEY
Fat guy hoarding all the food? Is that what you think?

CHARLIE
No, it's just we've been here for two weeks, you know,
and you've not really...

HURLEY
Slimmed down much?

CHARLIE
All I need's a bag of peanuts.

HURLEY
I have no food, all right? And for the record, I'm
down a notch on my belt.

CHARLIE
Oh.

HURLEY
I'm a big guy. It's gonna be a while before you're
gonna wanna give me a piggy-back ride, okay?

They start walking again.

CHARLIE
Sorry. Sorry. That was bad form.

HURLEY
Yeah, I'm used to it.

CHARLIE
So, not even a bag of --

HURLEY
Dude.

CHARLIE
Okay, all right. I'm sorry.

INT. ISLAND - CAVES - DAY

Michael's trying to fillet a fish and gets fish guts all over his face.

MICHAEL
Ahh! Damn stupid...

Sun walks over.

SUN
Michael. The sick girl --

Sun imitates labored breathing.

MICHAEL
Yeah, asthma.

SUN
Yes, asthma. I think I can help her.

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - DAY

Sawyer is napping. He wakes up by hearing footsteps. Sayid is standing over him.

SAYID
Good morning.

Sayid whacks Sawyer upside the head and knocks him out. Jack and Sayid carry Sawyer into the forest. Kate comes up on them.

KATE
What are you doing?

Jack and Sayid don't answer.

KATE (cont'd)
Jack!

JACK
This was Sawyer's choice, not mine.

KATE
If you do this...

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

Sawyer's on his knees near a tree with his hands tied behind him around the trunk. Sayid tosses water in Sawyer's face to wake him up.

SAWYER
Well, ain't you the brave one. Jumping a guy
while he's napping.

Sayid takes a few steps back and reveals that Jack is there too.

SAWYER (cont'd)
Uh-oh. I'm in trouble now, ain't I?

Jack approaches him.

JACK
Sawyer, we gave you a chance to do the right thing.
Now all I want is the asthma medicine. Just tell
me where the inhalers are and we'll stop.

SAWYER
Stop what, chico?

Jack looks over to see Sayid sharpening a small piece of wood into points.

JACK
It doesn't have to be this way.

SAWYER
Yeah, it does.

Sayid comes up to Sawyer and kneels.

SAYID
We do not have bamboo in Iraq, although we do have
something similar -- reeds. But their effect is
the same when the cutes are inserted underneath
the fingernails.

SAWYER
You know what I think, Ali? I think you've never
actually tortured anybody in your life.

SAYID
Unfortunately for us both, you're wrong.

Sayid goes behind Sawyer and does something to put Sawyer in pain.

SAWYER
That's it? That's all you got? Splinters? No
wonder we kicked your ass in the Gulf...

Sawyer SCREAMS. Sayid continues to cause Sawyer pain.

JACK
Sayid! Sayid!

Sayid stops what he's doing and stands.

SAWYER
No. Don't stop now. I think my sinuses are clearing.

JACK
(to Sawyer)
What the hell is wrong with you?

SAYID
Perhaps losing an eye will loosen your tongue.

Sayid puts the point of the knife on Sawyer's cheek just below his eye.

SAWYER
Okay. Okay.

SAYID
Where is it?

SAWYER
Only person I'll tell is her.

JACK
Kate?

SAWYER
That's the deal.

TIME CUT TO:

INT. BAR - DAY

Kilo, a loan shark, is playing pool.

KILO
Tell me, Sawyer. Do you want to die? 'Cause
when a man walks in my place and tells me he
left $160,000 of my hard-won dollars in the care
of a civilian I got to ask myself if what I'm
hearing isn't a desperate cry for the sweet
release of death.

SAWYER
Deal closed today. See, women are easy. A few
Cosmos, a couple of stunts they hadn't seen
between the sheets and they think the scam's
their idea. Now, the husbands, they need to touch
the money, smell it, believe that if they had the
brass to put that suitcase in the trunk of their
family sedan and speed away, they just might have
a chance at being an honest-to-gosh outlaw.

KILO
Okay, Tex. If you got your grift so pat what'd you
need my money for? Where's your seed from the last
couple you wrote?

SAWYER
Well, what can say? I like earning it as much as
I like spending it.

KILO
Be that as it may, I know a thing or two about
making people suffer. Now, you have my money
plus 50% by noon tomorrow or I'll tell you all
about it.

TIME CUT TO:

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

Sawyer's still tied to the tree. He looks up and sees Kate. She walks to him.

KATE
So, I'm here. Where is it?

SAWYER
Happy to tell you as soon as I get that kiss.

KATE
What? Are you serious?

SAWYER
Baby, I am tied to a tree in the jungle of mystery.
I just got tortured by a damn spinal surgeon and a
genuine Iraqi. Of course I'm serious. You're just
not seeing the big picture here, freckles. Are you
really gonna let that girl suffocate ‘cause you can't
bring yourself to give me one little kiss? Hell,
it's only first base. Lucky for you I ain't greedy.

There is a long pause as Kate considers this.

KATE
Okay.

SAWYER
Okay.

Kate kneels in front of him and leans in and kisses him. They pull apart.

SAWYER (cont'd)
I don't have it.

KATE
What?

SAWYER
The medicine. I don't have it. I never did.

KATE
The book -- they said you found it in their luggage.

SAWYER
Book washed up on shore. It went in the drink with
the rest of --

Kate hits him in the face, gets up and walks back to Jack, who's out of sight.

KATE
He doesn't have it.

JACK
What?

SAYID
He's lying. Can't you see that? He's been lying
from the beginning. He doesn't want us to get off
this island. That's why he attacked me.

JACK
Hold on a minute, man.

SAYID
He destroyed the transceiver.

Sayid runs to where Sawyer is.

JACK
You don't know that, Sayid.

Jack follows Sayid. Sawyer sees Sayid coming and is able to slip out of his bonds. Sawyer tackles Sayid and they wrestle.

JACK
Hey! Hey! Hey!

Sayid plunges the knife into Sawyer's arm on accident. Jack pulls it out and blood starts to gush.

JACK
He hit an artery. Keep still, damn it.

Jack digs his fingers into Sawyer's arm as he tries to stop the blood.

JACK (cont'd)
Sayid, I need my stuff from the caves. My leather
backpack. Go!

Sayid runs off.

KATE
Can you make it stop?

Jack just looks at her.

END ACT THREE

ACT FOUR

INT. ISLAND - CAVES - DAY

Boone is watching over Shannon, who's sleeping. Sayid runs up to get Jack's backpack. Boone approaches Sayid.

BOONE
Whose blood is that? Whose blood is that?!

SAYID
Sawyer.

Sayid starts to run back to Jack

BOONE
You went after Sawyer and you didn't even
tell me?
(following)
She's my sister.

SHANNON
Boone?
(Boone stops)
Don't leave me alone, okay?

Boone walks back to Shannon.

BOONE
I'm not going anywhere, okay?

SHANNON
Okay.

Sayid runs off. Michael comes in with some plant branches and Sun approaches him.

MICHAEL
Look, are these the right ones? I think I
found the right tree, but...

SUN
Let me see.
(sniffs the branches)
Oh, yes. Good.

Jin enters the caves and comes into view of Michael and Sun.

JIN
(in Korean)
[What's going on here? What are you doing
sneaking around with this guy?]

Sun just looks at Jin and walks away. Jin stares at Michael.

MICHAEL
(shakes head)
Don't, man. I'm telling you...don't.

Michael walks away.

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

Jack is still trying to stop the blood.

SAWYER
Let go. I know you want to.

JACK
Shut up and stop moving.

SAWYER
You've been waiting for this, haven't you?
Now you get to be a hero again, 'cause that's
what you do. You fix everything up all nice.
Time to let go, freckles. We already made out.
What else I got to live for?

Jack looks to Kate, who's looking at Sawyer.

SAWYER (cont'd)
Hey, Jack. There's something you should know.
If the tables were turned, I'd watch you die.

TIME CUT TO:

INT. DAVID & JESSICA'S LIVING ROOM - DAY

SAWYER
(smiling)
All righty. Looks like we're in the
oil business.

DAVID
We're cool?

SAWYER
Oh, we're cool.

DAVID
We get the money back...

SAWYER
A week from tomorrow. Tripled.

DAVID
You're not gonna skip town, are you?

JESSICA
David, for God's sake! He left all his money
with us. We could have skipped town.

SAWYER
Smart woman you've got there, David. Don't
let her go.

A little boy comes out form another room.

JESSICA
Hi, baby! What are you doing up?

Upon seeing the boy, Sawyer's smile disappears.

JESSICA (cont'd)
Are you feeling better?

BOY
Will you read to me?

JESSICA
In a minute, sweetheart. We have company
right now.

Sawyer and the boy stare at each other.

DAVID
(to Sawyer)
You okay?

SAWYER
Deal's off.

DAVID
Excuse me?

SAWYER
Deal's off. Forget it.

JESSICA
What are you doing?

DAVID
Hold on. What is this, a joke?

SAWYER
I'm calling it of, walking away.

DAVID
You're not walking out of here. You know
what I had to do for this? All this money
in one day?

David tries to physically prevent Sawyer from leaving the house.

SAWYER
Take your hand off me, boy.

JESSICA
Sawyer?

DAVID
What's going on here?

JESSICA
This isn't how it was supposed to work.
You said that we were...

DAVID
He said...what did he say, Jessica?

Sawyer drops the briefcase and walks out of the house.

TIME CUT TO:

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - TENT - DAY

Sawyer wakes up.

KATE
You're lucky to be alive.

SAWYER
Jack?

KATE
Went to the caves to check on Shannon.

She moves closer and holds up Sawyer's letter.

KATE (cont'd)
I read it again, and then again, because I've
been trying to figure out why you beat up Boone
instead of just telling him that you didn't have
his sister's medication. Why you pretended to
have it anyway. The thing that I keep coming
back around to is that you want to be hated. Then
I looked at the envelope. "America's Bicentennial.
Knoxville, Tennessee." You were just a kid. Eight,
maybe nine years old. This letter wasn't written to
you. You wrote this letter. Your name's not Sawyer,
is it?

SAWYER
It was his name. He was a confidence man.
Romanced my momma to get to the money. Wiped
them out clean, left a mess behind. So I wrote that
letter. I wrote it knowing one day I'd find him.
But that ain't the sad part. When I was 19 I needed
six grand to pay these guys off I was in trouble with.
So I found a pretty lady with a dumb husband who had
some money. And I got him to give it to me. How's that
for a tragedy? I became the man I was hunting. I
became Sawyer.
(he looks at Kate)
Don't you feel sorry for me.
(he snatches the letter back)
Get the hell out. Get out.

Kate leaves the tent.

TAG

INT. ISLAND - CAVES - DAY

Sun is rubbing something onto Shannon's upper chest.

BOONE
I don't know. It's like some miracle. She
just showed up with that mixture.

Boone and Jack walk over to Sun and Shannon.

BOONE (cont'd)
She rubbed it on Shannon's chest and ten minutes
later she was breathing.

Jack sniffs the mixture.

JACK
Eucalyptus. Smart, Jack.
(to Sun)
Thank you very much.

Sun smiles and looks back at Jin who's carrying firewood.

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - DAY

Claire is napping and wakes up when Charlie starts taking her things off the clothesline.

CLAIRE
What are you doing?

CHARLIE
Packing your stuff. You're moving to the caves.

CLAIRE
You didn't? Peanut butter? No way!

CHARLIE
Just like you ordered. Oh, there is one thing.
(he kneels in front of her)
It's extra smooth.

CLAIRE
That's okay.

Charlie pulls out an empty canning jar and unscrews the top.

CLAIRE
(disappointed)
It's empty.

CHARLIE
What? No. No, it's not. It's full. Full to
the brim with stick-to-the-roof-of-your-mouth,
oh-God-it-makes-you-want-a-glass-of-milk --

Charlie mimes sticking his finger into peanut better and puts it into his mouth.

CHARLIE (cont'd)
-- extra smooth.
(lets out a pleased sigh)
It's the best bloody peanut butter I've
ever tasted.
(they both smile)
You want some?

Charlie holds the jar out to Claire who mimes sticking her finger into peanut butter.

Another part of the beach. Kate is standing by herself and Sayid walks by.

KATE
Sayid.

He stops and comes back to her

SAYID
I can't stay here.

KATE
What?

SAYID
I'm leaving. I don't know for how long.

KATE
Sayid, you can't. We still don't know what's
out there.

SAYID
I have worse things to fear than what's in the
jungle. What I did today, what I almost did,
I swore to do never again. If I can't keep
that promise, I have no right to be here.

KATE
There's nowhere to go.

SAYID
Someone has to walk the shore and map the island.
See what else there is. I can't think of a better
person to do it than the only one I trust. I hope
we meet again.

He takes her hand and kisses it and walks away.
