EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - DAY
Sayid is sitting by himself on the beach. No one else is around. He's looking at a picture of a woman. There's Arabic writing on the back. He looks to his left and sees a cable. He picks it up and sees that it goes from the water into the forest.
EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - TENT - DAY
Jack pulls the bandage off Sawyer's arm.
JACK
You want it easy, quit moaning. I got to
change these bandages.
SAWYER
Yeah, well, try not taking my skin off with
them. How'd I score the house call, Dr.
Quinn? Trying to ease your conscience?
JACK
My conscience is fine, thanks.
SAWYER
Of course. What have you got to feel guilty
about? I mean, you just let that damn Arab
torture me. Stood by and watched. Now you
figure you'll patch me up and buy you a ticket
into heaven? Only reason you're here --
JACK
I'm here because no one else wants anything to
do with you.
SAWYER
She does.
Sawyer smiles and Jack laughs.
Jack walks over to Kate who's staring down the beach.
KATE
It's been two days since Sayid took off on
his own. I keep looking up thinking I'm
gonna see him coming back.
JACK
He'll come back when he's found what he's
looking for -- the French transmission.
KATE
He wasn't looking for anything. He left
because of what happened, because of what
he did.
JACK
It was an accident.
KATE
Well, accidents happen when you torture
people, Jack.
JACK
Sayid's a trained soldier, Kate. He can
take care of himself.
Jack walks away.
EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY
Sayid is following the cable. He sees a trip wire and steps over it but he sets off another one and is caught by his ankle and hauled upside down. As he's swinging, a sharpened branch stabs his leg.
EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - NIGHT
Sayid is still upside down and saying something in Arabic. There's rustling in the underbrush.
Someone with a knife cuts the rope that's holding Sayid, and he falls to the ground and passes out.
EXT. ISLAND - CAVES - NIGHT
Jack is bandaging up a man who has hives.
JACK
(to Hurley)
What's going on out there?
HURLEY
Uh, you know, the usual. People yelling at each
other over nothing.
RASH GUY
Doc, what do you think this is, this, uh, this
rash? It's bad, right? Like some kind of a
tropical disease?
JACK
It's hives.
RASH GUY
What's that? Is that like poison ivy?
JACK
It's a common rash, sometimes brought on by heat
and stress. Just try to relax. It'll clear up.
RASH GUY
Right.
JACK
Try to keep your mind off it.
Jack stands.
Rash guy sees Sun holding aloe leaves.
HURLEY
"Try to keep your mind off it"? What else has
that guy got to do but stress?
JACK
I have enough on my plate without having to
treat hypochondriacs.
HURLEY
You, well, that's like my point, man We're
all fried. I mean, have you taken a look at
everybody out there? Everybody's way tense.
Dude, I'm just saying it'd be sweet if we
could have, I don't know, something to do.
JACK
We're surviving here, Hurley. And that's my main
concern, is keeping us alive. Things could be worse.
HURLEY
How?
INT. ISLAND - UNDERGROUND BUNKER - NIGHT
A light is swinging overhead and we hear a female voice.
Sayid starts to wake up. He is chained to a metal mattress and can vaguely see someone moving around.
ROUSSEAU
Where is Alex?
SAYID
Who are you?
ROUSSEAU
Wo ist Alex? Where is Alex?
SAYID
I don't know what you're talking about.
Rousseau flips a switch and Sayid is electrocuted.
SAYID
Please, let's not --
ROUSSEAU
Where is Alex?
SAYID
I don't know any Alex.
(she shocks him again)
Stop!
INT. IRAQI BASE - INTERROGATION ROOM - DAY
Sayid's just hit a man. There is another guard observing.
SAYID
[You want me to stop, Falah? Then start
answering my question because I can do this
all day. I assure you we already know the
truth. But I want you to admit it.]
(in English)
And all the pain will stop Your Shiite friends
have already implicated you in the bombing.
(grabs Falah's hair)
You planted the device in the party's headquarters,
didn't you? You killed two soldiers! Confess it.
Confess it and perhaps it will only cost you your
hands instead of your life.
Falah vomits.
EXT. IRAQI BASE - DAY
Sayid and Omar are walking.
OMAR
Perhaps. But that's really not the point, is it?
You handled yourself very well in there.
SAYID
Did I?
OMAR
I've put in for you reassignment to intelligence
division, if you still wish it.
SAYID
Yes sir, very much so.
OMAR
Good. But stop calling me "sir" when it's just
the two of us.
SAYID
You're my superior officer, Omar, for now.
OMAR
And I'll enjoy it while it lasts. That reminds
me, Sayid --
Sayid sees a woman prisoner being brought into the base.
SAYID
I am willing to make that sacrifice.
OMAR
Good.
They salute and Omar walks away.
EXT. ISLAND - CAVES - NIGHT
HURLEY
Yo, what's this?
LOCKE
They were in the jungle. They must have
fallen from the plane.
HURLEY
What are you guys doing out in the jungle
at night?
ETHAN
Best time to hunt.
LOCKE
Ethan here has some experience. Spotted some
tracks. Look like they might be rabbit or
some other rodent.
HURLEY
Rodent -- yum.
ETHAN
I figured people are starting to get tired of
eating boar meat.
HURLEY
Mm, you got that right. All right. Well, I'll take
a look at these see if there's anything useful.
ETHAN
Okay.
Ethan walks away. Hurley starts to go through the suitcases. Walt sees Locke put knife into his belt sheath. He checks to see that Michael's sleeping and gets up and goes to Locke.
LOCKE
For a bit.
WALT
Can I go with you? I mean, I just want to
learn how to do what you do.
MICHAEL
Walt!
WALT
I was just -- I was just talking to Mr.
Locke about --
MICHAEL
I know what you were doing. Not gonna happen,
man. Get back to bed.
Hurley has just opened another bag.
He smiles.
INT. ISLAND - UNDERGROUND BUNKER - NIGHT
Sayid's just been zapped again.
ROUSSEAU
Si quelqu'un m'entend...
Je vous en prie...
Venez à notre aide...
Il les a tués, Il les a tous tués.*
16 years. Has it really been that long?
ROUSSEAU
You just happened to hear my distress
call? I know what you are.
She hits Sayid in the head with an object and knocks him out.
* ENGLISH TRANSLATION
"If someone can hear me...
I beg of you...
Come help us...
It killed them, it killed them all."
INT. ISLAND - UNDERGROUND BUNKER - DAY
Sayid wakes up as Rousseau is going through some of his stuff. He sees a jacket with a name and says it.
ROUSSEAU
How do you know my name?
SAYID
I read it. There, on the jacket. What is
this place? Those batteries, they wouldn't
be able to produce enough power to transmit
your distress call all these years.
ROUSSEAU
Broadcast's from somewhere else, but they
control it now.
SAYID
They?
ROUSSEAU
You. And the others like you.
SAYID
I don't know who you think I am. I've already
told you. I am not...
ROUSSEAU
Sayid?
SAYID
How do you know my...
ROUSSEAU
My name was on a jacket, yours is on the envelope
you carry. Who is she? The woman in the photographs.
SAYID
Nadia. Her name is Nadia.
INT. IRAQI BASE - STAIRWELL
Omar and Sayid walk down the steps.
SAYID
You think she knows who orchestrated the bombing?
OMAR
Well, that, my friend, is exactly what you will
find out.
Omar walks away. A guard opens the door to the interrogation room and Sayid walks in.
INT. IRAQI BASE - INTERROGATION ROOM
Sayid walks to Nadia, who's sitting at a table.
NADIA
Nobody calls me Noor, Sayid. You of all people
should know that. What? You don't remember me?
Am I so different from the little girl in the
schoolyard who used to push you in the mud?
SAYID
Nadia.
NADIA
And your mother would tell my mother, "Why must you
pick on little Sayid?" And I'd answer, "Because he
ignores me."
SAYID
You had enough attention with your family's wealth
and your charm.
NADIA
Such things matter little to children. But then you
always were older than your years, weren't you, Sayid?
SAYID
Not old enough to understand that being pushed in the
mud was a sign of affection. Now you're a traitor to
your country. Tell me what you know about the bombing,
Nadia. Tell me, or I swear I will hurt you.
NADIA
Ha. Oh, I know, Sayid. This is not my first interrogation
by the Republican Guard.
Nadia shows a patch of scarred skin on shoulder.
She holds out her hands.
SAYID
If you were innocent, I'm sorry. But this
bombing is a different matter. Nadia...
NADIA
Go on, Sayid. Do your work. I'm not going to
tell you anything.
SAYID
Then I'm going to hurt you.
NADIA
I know.
INT. ISLAND - UNDERGROUND BUNKER - DAY
SAYID
I was a soldier.
ROUSSEAU
You were? And are you still?
SAYID
It was a long time ago.
ROUSSEAU
Tell me more about her, the woman. Nadia.
SAYID
Alex -- who is he?
EXT. ISLAND - CAVES - DAY
Michael is sketching something.
MICHAEL
Um. I'll take you later, man. I'm in the
middle of something.
WALT
But there's nothing to do around --
MICHAEL
Well, you gotta figure out stuff to do. Know
what I'm saying? You got to find a way to
entertain yourself.
Hurley's shuffling through some luggage.
He pops open a container.
HURLEY
Hold on, man. I'm busy.
Hurley walks to Michael and grabs the stick that he's holding.
MICHAEL
What?
HURLEY
Thanks, man.
JACK
Hurley. What are you doing?
Hurley just laughs.
INT. ISLAND - UNDERGROUND BUNKER - DAY
SAYID
I didn't know you were alive.
ROUSSEAU
Still lying.
SAYID
I'm not lying.
ROUSSEAU
Lies! Like this plane crash that you survived.
You claimed there were others.
SAYID
More than 40, yes.
ROUSSEAU
Then, why are you alone?
SAYID
I left them.
ROUSSEAU
Why?
SAYID
There was -- I did something. Something I'm
ashamed of.
ROUSSEAU
And Nadia, you left her, too?
SAYID
She wasn't on the plane. She's dead. Because
of me.
ROUSSEAU
I'm so sorry. I want to show you something.
EXT. ISLAND - CAVES - DAY
Michael's explaining his sketch.
JACK
This is -- you drew this?
MICHAEL
I was an artist in a previous life.
JACK
I thought you were in construction.
MICHAEL
I am, I mean, you know, I was. It's a
long story.
CHARLIE
(comes into camp)
Hey Jack. Hurley's all worked up about
something. Said we should come see it.
EXT. ISLAND - OPEN FIELD- DAY
People are gathering around Hurley, who is holding a pole.
JACK
What?
Pan out to show a set of golf clubs.
JACK
Hurley, you built a golf course?
HURLEY
Rich idiots fly to tropical islands all
the time to whack balls around.
MICHAEL
All the stuff we got to deal with, man. This
is what you've been wasting your time on?
HURLEY
Dudes, listen. Our lives suck. Everyone's
nerves are stretched to the max. I mean, we're
lost on an island, running from boars and monsters...
freaking polar bears!
MICHAEL
Polar bears?
CHARLIE
You didn't hear about the polar bear?
HURLEY
Look, all I'm saying is if we're stuck here,
then just surviving's not gonna cut it. We
need some kind of relief, you know? We need some
way that we can, you know, have fun. That's right,
fun. Or else we're just gonna go crazy waiting for
the next bad thing to happen.
Jack and Michael just look at each other.
INT. ISLAND - UNDERGROUND BUNKER - DAY
Rousseau spins a figurine from a music box.
SAYID
You mean Alex.
ROUSSEAU
Robert. It was such a comfort to me in the
first few years here.
SAYID
I could fix it for you. I could take a look
at it if you freed my hands.
(Rousseau stands)
I'm fairly good with mechanical things.
(She goes to a cabinet)
I'll need my hands.
Rousseau sharpens a needle with sandpaper.
SAYID
What are you doing?
She fills the syringe with some liquid.
SAYID
Rousseau.
She approaches him with the syringe.
She injects the liquid into Sayid.
EXT. ISLAND OPEN GOLF COURSE - DAY
Jack and Michael are head-to-head.
JACK
Okay. Give me a seven iron.
MICHAEL
Got it.
JACK
(calls)
Hey! Heads up over there.
Hurley and Charlie are dancing around by the hole, taunting Jack.
HURLEY
Don't blow it!
CHARLIE
You won't get anywhere near us!
Jack is about to swing but Rash Guy calls out to him.
JACK
Uh.
RASH GUY
Are you playing golf?
JACK
Yeah.
RASH GUY
Can I play?
INT. ISLAND - UNDERGROUND BUNKER - DAY
Sayid's tied to a chair. He wakes up.
SAYID
Do you want me to fix your music box, or
don't you?
ROUSSEAU
Yes. Yes, please.
SAYID
Then I want to know your name. Your first name.
ROUSSEAU
Danielle. My name is Danielle.
SAYID
And how did you come to be on this island,
Danielle?
ROUSSEAU
We were part of a science team.
SAYID
A science team armed with rifles. Was Robert
on the team?
ROUSSEAU
Yes.
SAYID
And Alex, was he too?
ROUSSEAU
Our vessel was three days out of Tahiti when
our instruments malfunctioned. It was night.
The storm...the sounds...the ship slammed into
rocks, ran aground. The hull breached beyond
repair, so we made camp. Dug out this temporary
shelter. Temporary. Nearly two months we survived
here. Two months before --
SAYID
Your distress signal. The message I heard. You
said, "It killed them all."
ROUSSEAU
We were coming back from the black rock. It was
them. They were the carriers.
SAYID
Who were the carries?
ROUSSEAU
The others.
SAYID
What others? What is the black rock? Have you
seen other people on this island?
ROUSSEAU
No. But I hear them. Out there in the jungle.
They whisper.
(pause)
You think I'm insane.
SAYID
I think you've been alone for too long.
INT. IRAQI BASE - HOLDING CELL - DAY
Sayid walks in and gives Nadia food.
NADIA
That depends on what you'd like to talk about,
Sayid. Books? Weather? Since I've seen neither
in this cell for weeks. I'm afraid my conversation
will suffer.
SAYID
We have two suspects in custody. Have a look at
these photographs. All you need to do is nod. If
you prove you're willing to cooperate I think I can
get them to free you.
She touches his hand.
SAYID
This isn't a game, Nadia.
NADIA
Yet you keep playing it, Sayid. Pretending to be
something I know you're not.
Shannon is sun bathing and Boone approaches her.
SHANNON
You finally learned how to tie your own shoes?
BOONE
Funny. Someone at the caves built a golf course.
SHANNON
Are you high?
BOONE
Seriously, a golf course. Apparently Jack's
playing with them right now.
KATE
Jack? Is golfing?
BOONE
That's what I hear. I don't know about you guys,
but I'm gonna go check this out.
SHANNON
Wait for me, bonehead.
Kate drops firewood and starts to follow Boone.
KATE
If you want to come, you should just say.
SAWYER
I think I'll pass on that, freckles. Not big on
crowds, and let's face it, crowd's not too hot
on me either.
KATE
One outcast to another -- I'd think about making
more of an effort.
Kate walks away.
INT. ISLAND - UNDERGROUND BUNKER - DAY
We hear a music box.
ROUSSEAU
Thank you.
(she takes the box)
Thank you so much. Thank you so much.
As he hands her the box and screwdriver, he palms the screwdriver.
ROUSSEAU
Go?
SAYID
Back to the people I told you about.
She closes the music box.
SAYID
Not safe? What's not safe?
ROUSSEAU
You need me. You can't leave.
SAYID
Danielle.
Both hear a roaring sound. Danielle pulls on another shirt and grabs a rifle.
ROUSSEAU
If we're lucky it's one of the bears.
SAYID
If we're lucky?
Danielle starts to climb up the ladder.
ROUSSEAU
There's no such thing as monsters.
Sayid sees the other rifle sitting on the chair.
EXT. IRAQI BASE - NIGHT
SAYID
What?
OMAR
The Jazeem woman has given us nothing. This will
send a message to the others who will not talk.
SAYID
I just need more time with her.
OMAR
You have had more than a month, Sayid. Now
bring her outside and shoot her or I will. Is
this a problem?
SAYID
No. It's not a problem.
OMAR
Good.
Omar walks away.
INT. IRAQI BASE - NADIA'S CELL - NIGHT
The door is opened and Nadia shields her eyes from the light in the hallway.
SAYID
(throws a hood into her lap)
Put it on.
NADIA
Are you going to hurt me, Sayid?
INT. ISLAND - UNDERGROUND BUNKER - DAY
Sayid is using the screwdriver to undo his locks. He grabs his things, plus Danielle's drawn maps of the island and the second rifle. He climbs out of the hut, leaving Nadia's picture behind.
EXT. ISLAND OPEN GOLF COURSE - DAY
Jack just took a swing with the club.
HURLEY
Dude, I think you stuck it.
CHARLIE
Lucky, lucky...
Kate walks up.
JACK
Hey, when did you show up?
KATE
A while ago. I almost didn't recognize you.
You're smiling.
JACK
I have to watch that.
They both chuckle.
JACK
Wasn't me. It was al Hurley. I've been going
crazy trying to make everyone feel safe. I haven't
been sleeping because I want everyone to feel safe.
He builds a golf course and everyone feels safe.
Hurley swings the club and digs it into the ground.
CHARLIE
It's a mulligan. Mulligan. It's a gentleman's
sport. You got to get the words right. Mulligan.
WALT
(walks up to Michael)
Dad.
MICHAEL
Hey, come here. Check this out.
CHARLIE
You want to. Let me. Let me --
Charlie goes behind Hurley and wraps his arms around him to help him swing properly.
Charlie lets go.
Charlie walks away.
MICHAEL
What? I left you with Claire.
WALT
She's sleeping.
MICHAEL
Oh man. I'm, I'm sorry. I just. I just
got caught up. I'm really sorry, Walt. I
screwed up. I'll make it up to you. Hey,
you wanna play?
Hurley digs the club again and people laugh.
WALT
Nah. There's other people waiting.
MICHAEL
Oh no. Don't worry about it. They won't
mind. You want to take a swing?
CHARLIE
Michael, it's you shot. You're up.
MICHAEL
Oh, okay, cool.
(to Walt)
So we'll play later, okay?
Walt walks off.
EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY
Sayid is limping through the forest. He hears some branches snap. He turns around.
Danielle, on her own, hears something too. She walks forward with her gun raised. Sayid comes from behind and aims his gun at her.
She turns to face him and raises her gun.
INT. IRAQI BASE - HALLWAY
Sayid is leading some guards, who are guiding the hooded Nadia.
The guards salute and walk away. Sayid grabs Nadia and pulls the hood off.
SAYID
Forty meters outside this door there's a
supply truck that will be leaving shortly.
(He unlocks her cuffs)
They don't check them on the way out, only
coming in. Get inside. Cover yourself any
way that you can. They won't reach the city
for 30 minutes. That's enough time for you
to jump out and hide yourself.
NADIA
Come with me.
SAYID
I can't. Desertion. They would kill my family.
I don't have your courage.
NADIA
You have more than you know.
She takes her picture out of his breast pocket and writes on the back.
OMAR
(approaches)
Sayid? What are you doing?
SAYID
Don't.
OMAR
Guard!
Sayid pulls out his gun and shoot Omar in the head.
SAYID
No. You escaped, you stole my gun and you shot
him and then you shot me.
He puts his gun by his thigh and pulls the trigger. He falls to the ground.
He hands her his gun.
Nadia takes the gun, drops her picture and runs out. He hears a truck drive away. He grabs the picture and reads the back.
EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY
Sayid and Danielle are in a Mexican standoff.
ROUSSEAU
You already have.
SAYID
Don't.
She raises her gun. Sayid pulls the trigger on his gun but it just clicks. He lowers the weapon.
SAYID
But you loved him.
ROUSSEAU
He was sick.
SAYID
Sick?
ROUSSEAU
It took them, one after the other. I had no choice.
They were already lost.
SAYID
You killed them.
ROUSSEAU
What would have happened if we were rescued?
I couldn't let that happen. I won't!
Sayid tosses his gun aside and puts his hands up.
ROUSSEAU
I know.
SAYID
Then why kill me?
ROUSSEAU
I can't let you go. Don't you understand?
To have someone to talk to, to touch.
SAYID
"You'll find me in the next life, if not
in this one."
ROUSSEAU
What?
SAYID
The writing on the back of Nadia's photograph.
I know what it's like to hold on to someone. I've
been holding of for the past seven years to just a
thought. A blind hope that somewhere she's still alive.
But the more I hold on, the more I pull away from those
around me. The only way off this... this place is with
their help.
(Danielle lowers her gun)
Come with me. You don't have to be alone, Danielle.
ROUSSEAU
(crying lightly)
Your people, the one's you're determined to get
back to, watch them. Watch them closely.
She starts to walk away.
ROUSSEAU
Alex was my child.
EXT. ISLAND OPEN GOLF COURSE - DAY
Charlie's eyeing his shot and Michael laughs.
HURLEY
Ah, dude. You were robbed.
CHARLIE
Bollocks. See that?
MICHAEL
Okay, Jack. It's up to you. Sink this, you get
the wear the blazer.
KATE
No pressure.
CHARLIE
Yeah, no pressure.
Charlie hands the club to Jack and walks away.
CHARLIE
Mate, you betting against me?
HURLEY
Sorry, dude. But you're a duffer like me.
BOONE
Make it $10 and you're on.
RASH GUY
I don't have any cash, but I'll bet my dinner
on the doc.
JACK
Oh!
SAWYER (O.S.)
I got two tubes of sunscreen and a flashlight
says he chokes.
There is a long pause as everyone notices Sawyer has joined the outskirts of their group.
BOONE
Yeah. Yeah, me too.
SHANNON
You just bet on Jack, dumbass.
BOONE
We need the sunscreen, princess.
EXT. ISLAND - GRASSY AREA - DAY
A knife has just landed in the trunk of a tree. Locke goes up to retrieve it.
WALT
(shakes his head)
Can you teach me how to do that?
Locke hands the knife to Walt.
EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY
Sayid is half running, half stumbling through the woods. The wind is whistling and there is an eerie hissing, howling, flapping, and then many voices whispering.
