TEASER

EXT. ISLAND - CAVES - DAY

Pick up from the end of ep. 10. Jack is bandaging Sayid's leg.

HURLEY
He wasn't on the plane!

KATE
Who wasn't on the plane?

HURLEY
Ethan, the Canadian guy. He's not on the
passenger manifest.

JACK
Well, where the hell is he?

HURLEY
I don't know. I saw him yesterday, but now...

JACK
(stands)
Has anyone seen Ethan?

KATE
Sayid's leg.

JACK
Has anyone seen Ethan?

MICHAEL
Yeah, yeah. He went to get some wood. Took off
on the path to the beach.
(re: Sayid)
Is he okay? What happened?

JACK
Where's Charlie?

KATE
What?

JACK
Where's Charlie?

LOCKE
He went after Claire.

There's a pause. Then Locke and Jack run through the forest. Locke stops.

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

LOCKE
Jack!

Jack stops running and walks to where Locke is pointing. Claire's bag is lying on the ground.

JACK
She was moving back to the beach. Claire, that's
hers. What happened? Where are they?

LOCKE
I don't know.
(looks around)
Footprints. At least 3 distinct sets all over
the place. It looks like there might have
been a struggle.

Locke sees something and goes to it.

JACK
What? What is it?

LOCKE
Drag marks here...and here.

JACK
Charlie. They were together.

LOCKE
I think they've been taken.

JACK
(yells)
Claire! Charlie!

LOCKE
Jack.

JACK
(yells)
Claire!

LOCKE
Jack!
(puts his finger to his mouth)
Shhh.

END OF TEASER

ACT ONE

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

Locke and Jack are tracking Claire and Charlie.

LOCKE
The tracks are still fresh.

JACK
This doesn't make any sense. How could one man
drag off two people, one of them pregnant?

LOCKE
You're asking the wrong question. Now how, why.

JACK
You think it was Ethan?

LOCKE
Certainly feels like it was Ethan, doesn't it?

JACK
By himself? How?

LOCKE
We can't account for all of our people and more
importantly, who's to say they're our people?

JACK
What?

LOCKE
Sayid said there were others.

JACK
Sayid said that we're not alone.

LOCKE
Semantics.

JACK
Sayid's injured. We don't even know where he
went. He's delirious.

LOCKE
I'm just telling you what the ground is
telling me.

JACK
So, which way is the ground telling you that
they went?

LOCKE
Jack, we don't know what's going on here.

JACK
We know enough.

LOCKE
We need to prepare. We could be back at the
caves in ten minutes, organize a search party.

JACK
Which way did they go, Locke?

Locke points and Jack runs off through the forest.

TIME CUT TO:

INT. HOSPITAL - OPERATING ROOM

Jack is working on a young girl. We hear the heart rate monitor beeping.

NURSE 1
Compensating. Stats are dropping.

JACK
Come on.

NURSE 2
BP's falling. She's bleeding out.

JACK
No, I've got the artery almost there.

We hear the heart rate monitor flatline.

NURSE 2
She's in arrest.

JACK
One milligram epi. Let's get the crash cart
in here. All right, artery's sealed. Close
her up.

NURSE 1
Defib.

JACK
Charged?

NURSE 1
Charged.

JACK
Clear.
(shocks the patient -- no response)
Charged?

NURSE 1
We're charged.

JACK
Clear.

He shocks her again -- no response. He starts compressions.

JACK (cont'd)
Come on. Come on back now. Come on. Come on
now. Come on back. Come on!

CHRISTIAN (O.S.)
Call it.

JACK
Come back. Come back, baby. Come on. Come
on now. You can do this. Come on.

He stops compressions.

CHRISTIAN
Call it, Jack. It's over. Call it.

JACK
You call it.

TIME CUT TO:

INT. ISLAND - CAVES - DAY

Locke is packing a backpack.

KATE
You let him go alone?

LOCKE
Don't worry. I'll catch up. What's the word
from the beach?

KATE
Nothing. Nobody has seen him. I'm coming
with you.

Locke hands her a flashlight

LOCKE
I figured you might.

EXT. ISLAND - CAVES - DAY

Shannon approaches Boone.

SHANNON
What are you doing? We need to get our water
and get back to the beach.

BOONE
(to Locke and Kate)
I heard you're forming a search party.
Can I help?

SHANNON
This is a deserted island. There's no
choppers, no Amber Alerts. How exactly
are you gonna find them?

LOCKE
By following Ethan's trail. No one can walk
through the wilderness without leaving signs --
bending blades of grass, breaking twigs --
especially with captives in tow, and yes, I
could use another hand if you're up for it.

BOONE
I'm up for it.

LOCKE
Then let's get moving.

At another part of camp.

WALT
I could take Vincent and he could sniff
something that belonged to Charlie, and
I can help.

MICHAEL
I said no, man. Hey, Locke. Hey, look,
you know a lot of us don't just wanna sit
here waiting for news.

LOCKE
Thanks, but we're set. Anyone else is just
gonna slow us down.

MICHAEL
Okay. Maybe I'll just put together
another party.

LOCKE
Good idea. We're going north. I suggest
you go south.

Locke walks away with his search party.

MICHAEL
(to Walt)
Come on.

EXT. ISLAND - OPEN LAND - DAY

Jack is looking around, stops and rests a moment.

TIME CUT TO:

INT. HOSPITAL - OPERATING ROOM

Resume previous flashback -- a nurse pulls the sheet over the deceased patient's head and leaves.

CHRISTIAN
Never thought I'd see the day, Jack. You barge
into my OR, you work on my patient.

JACK
You didn't have to do this procedure.

CHRISTIAN
I don't have to do anything.

JACK
Yeah. Of course you don't.

CHRISTIAN
I chose to do this procedure, this emergency
procedure, because when this girl crashed in
the ER they called me.

JACK
I was right upstairs.

CHRISTIAN
You should have stayed upstairs. And how did
you find out?

JACK
One of the nurses came to get me.

CHRISTIAN
Who?
(Jack doesn't answer)
Oh. Thank God I have you and some anonymous
nurse to rescue me.

JACK
She told me that your hands were shaking.

CHRISTIAN
My hands were not...

JACK
You cut her hepatic artery.

CHRISTIAN
She was in a car crash, Jack. Her insides
were a mess.

JACK
You made a mistake.

CHRISTIAN
They called me.

JACK
I don't care whether or not they called you.
You made a mistake. You tell them --

CHRISTIAN
Are you lecturing me? If you were upstairs and
I was in a restaurant having lunch then why did
they call me?

There's a pause.

JACK
How many drinks did you have at lunch, dad?

TIME CUT TO:

EXT. ISLAND - OPEN LAND - DAY

Locke, Kate, and Boone approach Jack.

LOCKE
Jack! Jack! It's a good thing you were going
in a circle. Not much of a search grid, but we
never would have found you otherwise.

KATE
(to Jack)
Did you find anything?

JACK
No.

LOCKE
You should go back to the caves -- Sayid's leg.

JACK
I dressed Sayid's leg. You found me, we can
find Charlie and Claire. Now, do we have a
trail to follow or not?

LOCKE
Jack, this was my fault.

JACK
What?

LOCKE
I hunted with Ethan. I spent time with him
and I never sensed anything...off. But for
everything that I know about hunting and
tracking, whoever he is, he knows more. If
we catch up with him I don't want anything
to happen to the only trained physician on
the island. Go back, be the doctor. Let me
be the hunter.

There's a pause.

JACK
Can we go now?

LOCKE
Follow me.

EXT. ISLAND - CAVES - DAY

Michael is filling water bottles with Hurley.

MICHAEL
I'm trying to help and all the guy can tell
me is go south. Like what, I'm gonna get in
his way or something?

HURLEY
We're all tweaked, man. Locke's just feeling
it like the rest of us.

MICHAEL
So what? I've got five other guys who are going
out there with me, putting our necks on the line
to try to find Charlie and Claire. All I'm saying
is I'm getting sick of being treated like a second-
class citizen around here because Mount Baldy can
bag a boar.

WALT
He knows a lot more than how to catch a boar. Mr.
Locke's a warrior. He can hunt, he can track stuff
and he's the only one that brought knives. So if it
were me, I'd listen to him.

MICHAEL
Well, I don't want you to. You understand?
(Walt nods)
You stay with Hurley. I might not be a warrior,
but I am going south.

Michael walks away.

HURLEY
(to Walt)
Back home, I'm known as something of a warrior
myself.

Walt shakes his head.

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

Locke is tearing a red shirt and tying a strip around a tree.

LOCKE
We mark our progress by line of sight. Tie
these off so we don't get lost.

BOONE
You can lead us back to camp, right?

LOCKE
If nothing happens to me.

BOONE
Maybe I'd better take marker detail.

Locke hands the shirt to Boone. Jack and Kate catch up.

JACK
Anything?

LOCKE
Not yet.

JACK
If you can't find the trail...

LOCKE
I'll pick it up again. I need to rest for a
minute to get our clarity back.

JACK
You're gonna take a break? It's gotta be almost
4 o'clock. When the sun sets, there's no way...

LOCKE
It's 4:25. And yes, I'm taking a break.

There's a long pause.

KATE
(to Jack)
Can I talk to you for a sec?

They walk out of earshot of Locke and Boone.

KATE
Would it kill you to give the guy a
little space?

JACK
It might.

KATE
Stop that.

JACK
What?

KATE
That. What's going on?

JACK
I didn't believe her -- Claire. I gave her
a sedative.

KATE
Jack, you can't...

JACK
She told me someone was after her, that she was
being attacked, and I... She just seemed so out
of it. I thought that her pregnancy was amping
up her stress and I -- I didn't believe her.

LOCKE
(calls out)
Jack!

Jack and Kate go running back to the others. Locke picks up one of Charlie's finger wrappings with the letter "L" on it. We flashback to Charlie on the beach writing the "L" to spell L-A-T-E on it. Back in the forester Kate and Jack reach Locke.

KATE
What is it?

Jack takes the bandage from Locke.

LOCKE
Look familiar?

JACK
It's Charlie's.

BOONE
You think it just came off?

JACK
No. He's leaving us a trail.

Locke nods.

END ACT ONE

ACT TWO

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

Jack and the rest of the search party are stumbling through the forest following the trail. Jack sees another of Charlie's bandages - the letter "A" -- purposefully stuck on the end of a branch. Jack goes and pulls it off.

JACK
They went this way.

LOCKE
I'm not so sure. There's another trail here.

JACK
What do you mean "another"?

LOCKE
These are footprints. People moved off
this way.

JACK
Charlie's leaving these for us to follow.
They went that way.

Jack points down the first path.

KATE
Unless Charlie isn't the one who's leaving them.
If Ethan knows that we're behind them, he could
be setting up a dummy trail. Take off in one
direction, double back in his old footprints.

BOONE
Wait, now you're a tracker?

LOCKE
You're just full of surprises.

JACK
So, we've got two trails, let's split up.
(points to the first way)
I'll take that one.

LOCKE
No. We should stay together, Jack.

JACK
Why? We've got two trails and apparently two trackers.

LOCKE
Be careful.

Locke and Boone follow the footprint trail, Jack and Kate follow Charlie's bandages trail.

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

Sawyer is walking with Walt.

SAWYER
Who got taken by what?

WALT
Charlie and Claire. They think Ethan
took them.

SAWYER
Ethan took 'em, huh?

WALT
Yeah.

SAWYER
Took 'em why? And who the hell's Ethan?

WALT
I don't know. He wasn't on the list thing.
The manifest.

SAWYER
Ever think he might have lied about his name?

WALT
It's stupid to lie about your name.

SAWYER
All righty, tattoo. Where do you think Ethan
came from?

WALT
Maybe he was already on the island before we were.

SAWYER
Got yourself one hell of an imagination, kid.

WALT
There could be lots of other people on the island.

SAWYER
So a tribe of evil natives planted a ringer
in the camp to kidnap a pregnant girl and a
reject from VH1 has-beens. Yeah, fiendishly
clever. And why am I getting the evening news
from a 6 year old?

WALT
I'm ten.

SAWYER
Okay, then it must be true.

WALT
If you don't believe me, ask Sayid. He said
we're not alone.

SAWYER
Sayid's back?

Walt just walks away without answering.

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

Boone is tying strips of the shirt to a tree.

BOONE
Red shirt.

LOCKE
Huh?

BOONE
Red shirt. You ever watch "Star Trek"?

LOCKE
Oh, not really.

BOONE
The crew guys that would go down to the planet
with the main guys, the captain and the guy with
the pointy ears, they always wore red shirts and
they always got killed.

LOCKE
Yeah?

BOONE
Yeah.

LOCKE
Sounds like a piss-poor captain.

Boone smiles at that.

BOONE
What do you do in the real world, Mr. Locke?

LOCKE
It's John.

BOONE
John.

LOCKE
Why don't you guess?

BOONE
Well, you're either a taxidermist or a hit man.

LOCKE
(laughs)
I was a regional collections supervisor for
a box company.

BOONE
A box company?

LOCKE
(nods)
They made boxes.

BOONE
Yeah, right.

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

Jack is speed walking through the woods and Kat's trying to keep up.

KATE
Please slow down!

JACK
You said they went this way.

KATE
I think they went this way. I'm not as good
at this as Locke is.

JACK
So, where'd you pick up the tracking skills,
Kate? Was that before or after you were on
the run?

KATE
I'm trying to help, Jack.

JACK
You know what might help? A little honesty.
Just give me something real. Anything.

KATE
My dad was in the army, ranger battalion. He
was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington State.
We'd go hiking together. One day we spent eight
hours tracking deer. Being in the woods, it was
like, it was like his religion.
(pause)
That was real. Anything you want to share, Jack?

TIME CUT TO:

INT. HOSPITAL - CHRISTIAN'S OFFICE - DAY

Christian is writing something on a document.

CHRISTIAN
Well, thanks for coming in, Jack. Have
a seat.

Jack remains standing. Christian slides the document in front of Jack and puts a pen on top.

JACK
What's it say?

CHRISTIAN
The truth. That a patient was brought to the
ER following a car accident, rushed to surgery
with massive internal bleeding. You joined me
and in spite of our most heroic efforts the patient
succumbed to her injuries.

JACK
Looks like you fixed everything but the patient.
You had no business being in the OR.

CHRISTIAN
You really think I would have walked in there
if I couldn't handle it?

JACK
You've done it before.

CHRISTIAN
That's right, I have, because I am perfectly
capable of making those --

JACK
How can you say that after what happened yesterday?

CHRISTIAN
The problem is not --

JACK
You were impaired.

CHRISTIAN
I know my limits.

JACK
I won't sign this.

Jack starts to walk out but stops when Christian continues.

CHRISTIAN
You were part of a team, Jack. I'm not the only
one on the hook for this. You called me off. You
were the surgeon of record when she died. Look,
accidents happen in surgeries all the time, Jack. That's
the truth and you know it. But if you contradict this
report, if you mention alcohol, well, that's the only fact
that's gonna matter. They'll strip me of my license.

JACK
Yes, they will.

CHRISTIAN
I know I have been hard on you. But that is how
you make a soft metal into steel. That is why you
are the most gifted young surgeon in this city. I
mean, this -- this career that is all about the greater
good. I've had to sacrifice certain aspects of my
relationship with you so that hundreds and thousands
of patients will live. Because of your extraordinary
skills...

There is a long pause as Christian puts his hand on Jack's shoulder.

CHRISTIAN (cont'd)
I know it's a long -- long time coming. What happened
yesterday, I promise you, will never happen again. And,
after what I've given, this isn't -- this is not just
about my career, Jack.

Christian holds out the pen to Jack.

CHRISTIAN (cont'd)
It's my life.

Jack takes the pen and signs the report.

CHRISTIAN
Thank you, son. Thank you.

END ACT TWO

ACT THREE

INT. ISLAND - CAVES - DAY

Sayid is resting when Sawyer comes in. Sayid wakes and sits up nervously.

SAWYER
Well, well, well. I don't know if you Islams
got a concept of karma, but I get the sense
the island just served you up a heaping platter
of cosmic payback.

SAYID
What do you want?

SAWYER
Doctor Do-Right doesn't trust me with his
antibiotics so I got to hump it up here every
day to get my meds. You know, a less magnanimous
man than I...

Sawyer picks up a straight razor and unfolds it.

SAWYER (cont'd)
Might just be thinking he could beat the ever-
living snot out of you right now without fear
of reprisal.

SAYID
You want a shot, take it. But know that I left
this camp out of shame for what I did to you.
It was never my intention to return.

SAWYER
Sorry. Fresh out of sweet forgiveness. If it
wasn't your intention to return then why did you?

SAYID
I was taken prisoner by the French woman.

SAWYER
The one that's been sending out a distress signal
for 16 years? She's alive?

SAYID
She was on a science expedition. She said
they shipwrecked.

SAWYER
Is she alone?

SAYID
She said that there are others on this island.

SAWYER
Her people?

SAYID
No. She believed they ad all gotten sick. She
murdered her entire team.

SAWYER
Right. And these others, who the hell are they?

SAYID
I don't know. She's never seen them.

SAWYER
Oh, she's never seen them, but she knows
they're there?

SAYID
If you believe her.

SAWYER
Do you?

SAYID
Maybe. Maybe not. But on my way back I heard
something in the jungle surrounding me.

SAWYER
Something like what?

SAYID
Have you got something to say to me, Sawyer? Or
are you going to continue asking me questions
you know I don't have the answers to?

SAWYER
(puts the razor down)
Tide's coming up the beach. The plane hull's
almost in the water. I kept your signal fire
burning.

Sawyer walks out of the caves.

EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - DAY

Hurley and Walt are playing backgammon. Hurley rolls.

HURLEY
Crap.

WALT
Your blots can't get in.

HURLEY
Yeah, I know my blots can't get in.

WALT
My roll.

HURLEY
(unenthusiastically)
Yahoo.

WALT
I need a four-three.

Walt shakes the dice in a cup, blows on it and shakes it again and again.

HURLEY
Dude, would you please roll?

Walt rolls a four-three.

WALT
Yes!

HURLEY
No!

WALT
Your turn.

Hurley rolls a three-six but can't get on the board.

WALT
It's okay. I wasn't very good when I first
started playing either.

HURLEY
I didn't just start playing. I took 17th in
a tournament once.

WALT
17th is not very good.

HURLEY
No, 17th is very good.

WALT
(shakes the dice)
Come on. Double sixes.
(rolls double sixes)
Yes!

HURLEY
Oh, you gotta be kidding me.

WALT
I'm lucky.

HURLEY
No one is that lucky.

WALT
My dad said I was the luckiest person
he ever knew.

HURLEY
Really?

WALT
Not Michael. Brian, my other dad. Yeah, um.
(rolls again)
Yes! Yes!

Walt has won the game. Hurley gets up to leave.

WALT (cont'd)
Come on. One more game. Double or nothing.

HURLEY
I got a meeting.

WALT
A meeting?

HURLEY
Yeah, a meeting.

WALT
You owe me $20,000.

HURLEY
You'll get it.

EXT. ISLAND - GRASSY AREA NEAR TREES - DAY

Boone and Locke are tracking Claire and Charlie.

BOONE
It's been about 15 minutes since we've seen
any sign. What are we following?

LOCKE
My gut.

BOONE
Great.

LOCKE
So, Boone, what do you do in the real world?

BOONE
I run a business.

LOCKE
What kind of business?

BOONE
Uh, it's a wedding thing.

LOCKE
Huh?

BOONE
My mother has this empire -- the Martha Stewart
of matrimony. I run one of the subsidiaries.

LOCKE
So, who's running it now?

BOONE
I guess it doesn't matter, does it?

LOCKE
Oh, I'm sure there are people who can handle
it temporarily.
(stops)
It's gonna start raining in one minute.

BOONE
One minute?

LOCKE
Give or take a few seconds.
(pause)
You should turn around, Boone, head back.

BOONE
What?

LOCKE
The trail's been cold for ¼ mile. Dangerous
terrain ahead. If you start now you'll make
it back to camp before dark.

BOONE
What about you?

LOCKE
I can take care of myself.

BOONE
No, I'm not gonna head back

LOCKE
I admire your courage, but you should --

BOONE
I'm not heading back.

LOCKE
All right.

Locke smiles, and it starts to rain.

BOONE
(disbelieving)
They teach you how to predict the weather
at a box company?

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

It's raining as Jack and Kate are walking through the trees and mud.

JACK
I guess we were right.

He picks up the "T" bandage from Charlie's hands, which is lying in the mud.

JACK (cont'd)
Where to now?

Jack hears echoing screams and a woman screaming. He takes off running.

KATE
Jack! Jack, where are you going?

Jack uses tree roots to try climbing up a muddy hill.

KATE (cont'd)
Jack!

JACK
Didn't you hear her?

KATE
(shakes her head)
Hear who?

Kate climbs behind Jack, but is having difficulty because of the rain. Jack loses his grip and slides down the hill and hits his head on the ground when he lands.

KATE
Jack!

Jack lands on his side at the bottom of the hill. He rolls onto his back and sees Ethan standing over him. Ethan puts a foot on Jack's chest and leans over.

ETHAN
If you do not stop following me, I will kill
one of them.

Ethan puts more pressure on Jack's chest.

ETHAN (cont'd)
Do you understand?

Jack grabs Ethan's foot and throws him off. They have a fistfight. All of Ethan's punches connect and Jack's do not.

ETHAN
No more warnings.

Ethan kicks Jack in the face who lands on his back and is temporarily knocked out.

END ACT THREE

ACT FOUR

TIME CUT TO:

INT. HOSPITAL - HALLWAY

Jack is walking down a corridor and sees his dad talking with a man.

ANDREA
Dr. Shephard.

JACK
Andrea. Andrea -- that man that my father's
talking to. Who is that?

ANDREA
That's her husband. He's threatening to sue.

Andrea walks away. Jack sees his dad put a hand on the husband's should just like he did to him when he wanted Jack to sign the false report.

CHRISTIAN
(overheard)
Sir, I'm very sorry.

TIME CUT TO:

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

Kate grabs Jack head and he wakes up. It has stopped raining.

KATE
Jack. Jack. Jack. Are you okay?

JACK
How long was I out?

KATE
I don't know. A few minutes. You slipped
with all the rocks and everything.

JACK
Ethan.

Jack struggles to get up.

KATE
What?

JACK
Ethan was here.

KATE
You banged your head, Jack.

JACK
No, no. He was here.

KATE
You have to stop. The rain has washed away
the trail. Even if he was here, you've got --

Jack starts to walk away.

KATE (cont'd)
Jack!

JACK
I'm not letting him do this.

KATE
Not letting him?

JACK
Not again.

TIME CUT TO:

INT. HOSPITAL - CONFERENCE ROOM

Jack and Christian are presenting their report to the board. Jack is just listening.

CHRISTIAN
She had massive internal hemorrhaging. We
realized that her blood pressure was continuing
to drop precipitously at which point the patient
went into cardiac arrest. Of course every effort
was made to resuscitate her, but the severity of
her injuries, the amount of internal bleeding, made
that impossible. Now, in my professional opinion,
ladies and gentlemen, and that's all I have. By the
time I was called in the damage was irreversible.

HEAD DOCTOR
Okay, thanks Christian. Sorry about this
formality.

CHRISTIAN
Of course.

HEAD DOCTOR
Just one final detail. You were aware of the patient's
pregnancy when you went into the procedure?

Jack looks up startled.

CHRISTIAN
Absolutely. The patient's husband had informed the
attending in the ER. It was, however, extremely
early in the pregnancy so our primary focus had to
be on the mother.

HEAD DOCTOR
Okay, then. I think we're done here. Our final
report will be filed.

CHRISTIAN
Okay.

JACK
I need to --
(clears his throat)
-- revise my statement.
(pause)
I didn't come into the OR until well into
the procedure.

CHRISTIAN
Jack...

JACK
I was warned by one of the nurses that my
father was operating...
(pause)
...under the influence.

CHRISTIAN
Jack, this is not --

JACK
By the time I got there it was clear that my
father was not only incapacitated but that he
had also severed the patient's hepatic artery.
Which, in my professional opinion, caused the
crisis which led to her death.

Jack and Christian just stare at each other. Jack's eyes are moist.

TIME CUT TO:

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - DAY

Jack is running through the forest. Kate, behind him, stumbles through some branches and sees Charlie's last letter "E" on his hand at her eye level. We pan up to show Charlie blindfolded and hung by the neck on tree vines. Jack comes through the branches and also sees Charlie.

JACK
No!

He runs to grab Charlie's legs to hold him up as much as possible.

JACK
(to Kate)
You gotta cut him down.

Kate grabs a knife and climbs a nearby tree with the knife in her mouth.

JACK
Come on, Charlie. Hold on there.

Kate reaches out to cut the vines.

KATE
I can't reach! Pull him over!

Jack brings him close to Kate and she starts cutting.

JACK
Harder!

Charlie and Jack fall to the ground once the vines are cut. Jack puts Charlie on his back, takes off the blindfold, check his pupils and breathing. Kate kneels and holds Charlie's left hand.

JACK
He's not breathing.

Jack leans over and does mouth-to-mouth, and then starts chest compressions.

JACK (cont'd)
Come on, breathe. Breathe, Charlie. Come on.
Breathe! Come on, come on.

Jack does another set of mouth-to-mouth and compressions.

JACK (cont'd)
Come on. Come on! Come on. Come on.

KATE
Jack. Jack

Jack starts banging his fist into Charlie's chest.

JACK
Come on, Charlie. Come on. Come on. Come on.

Kate starts to cry and gets up. She can't look.

JACK (cont'd)
Come on! Come on! Come on! Come on, Charlie.
Come on! Come on!

KATE
(crying)
Jack.

JACK
Come on. Come on.

KATE
Jack. Jack.

She goes to Jack and tries to stop him from hitting Charlie.

KATE (cont'd)
Jack, he's - Jack, stop. He's not coming.

Jack stops beating Charlie.

KATE (cont'd)
It's okay.
(comforting)
It's okay.

JACK
No, no.

KATE
Jack! Jack!

JACK
Come on.

He beats Charlie's chest again and again.

KATE
Stop!

Kate gets up and moves away from Jack.

JACK
Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on.

Suddenly, Charlie gasps for air. He opens his eyes and sits up. Jack holds him as Charlie struggles for breath. Jack and Kate smile, relieved.

JACK
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just breathe. Just breathe.
Just breathe deep. Breathe deep.

Charlie coughs and settles down.

JACK (cont'd)
There you are. You're okay.
Kate laughs.

TAG

EXT. ISLAND - CAVES - NIGHT

Kate and Charlie are sitting by a fire. Jack comes up and hands Kate some water. Michael walks into camp.

WALT
Dad!
(hugs Michael)
They brought Charlie back but he hasn't said
anything since he came back.

Kate fixes the blanket that's around Charlie's shoulders, while Charlie stares off into the distance.

MICHAEL
(to Hurley)
They find Claire?

Hurley shakes his head no. Jack checks the bruises and cuts around Charlie's neck.

JACK
Does that hurt?
(no answer)
How's your breathing?
(no answer)
Charlie, you gotta talk to me.
(pause)
We're gonna go back out and look for Claire
the moment the sun comes up and I could really
use your help. I mean, anything that you can
tell me about what you remember -- where you
were going, see or hear.

CHARLIE
I didn't see anything, hear anything. I don't
remember...anything.
(pause)
Claire.

JACK
What?

CHARLIE
That's all they wanted.

JACK
They?

CHARLIE
All they wanted was Claire.

At the spring, Kate is getting water and Shannon approaches.

SHANNON
They aren't back yet.

KATE
I'm sure they just made camp for the night.
If there's anyone on the island that your
brother's safe with, it's Locke.

EXT. ISLAND - FOREST - NIGHT

It's raining as Locke leads with the flashlight.

BOONE
Are we lost?

LOCKE
No, Boone, we're not lost.

BOONE
Sorry, it's just, I don't see how you can
still be following his trail. I think we
should go back, man.

LOCKE
Don't you feel it?

BOONE
Feel what?

LOCKE
It.

BOONE
All right, John. I'm gonna follow the
strips back.

LOCKE
Suit yourself, Boone. You need this
more than I do.

Lock tosses the flashlight to Boone who drops it. When it lands it clangs on something metal. They both kneel.

BOONE
What is that?

They scrape away some mud. Locke bangs it with his knife.

LOCKE
Steel.

BOONE
Could that be part of the plane, part of
the wreckage?

Locke taps his knife in various spots and starts to push away some of the mud.

BOONE (cont'd)
What is that?

LOCKE
That's what we're gonna find out.

They really start pushing away the mud.
